A three plenum air distribution manifold for intake air to an internal combustion engine with long runners leading from first and second spaced side plenums for delivery of air and recirculating exhaust gases into corresponding combustion chambers of the engine. The side plenums are connected at their outer extremities by an acoustically balanced cross over passage selectively closed by a manifold tuning valve (MTV) for improving engine output torque during low engine speed. A third plenum intermediate the two side plenums communicates directly with the combustion chambers through short runner passages opened and closed by valves (SRVs) for optimizing the output of engine torque during a higher range of engine speeds. The air flow through the manifold is controlled by an onboard electronic controller responsive to operating signals from the engine to change the characteristics of the manifold with different engine speeds.

Method of distributing air in an engine intake manifold

A three plenum air distribution manifold for intake air to internal combustion engine with long, narrow runners leading from first and second spaced side plenums for delivery of air and recirculating exhaust gases into corresponding combustion chambers of the engine. One end of the spaced side plenums are connected by an acoustically balanced cross over passage selectively closed by a manifold tuning valve for improving engine output torque during low engine speed. A third plenum is positioned intermediate the two side plenums to communicate with the combustion chambers in bypass relation to the side plenums thereby directly supplying air to the combustion chambers through short runners which are selectively opened by valves to optimize engine torque over a higher range of engine speeds. The manifold tuning valve and short runner valves are controlled by an onboard electronic controller responsive to signals from the engine corresponding to parameters such as engine speed.

Multi-mode intake manifold assembly for internal combustion engines

A manual transmission shift control apparatus wherein dual cables lead from a floor-mounted shift control lever assembly directly, i.e., without bending, to dual select and shift shafts operatively connected to the transmission. The dual shafts are rotatably mounted and operated in a housing on top of the transmission. A selector mechanism bearing a shift finger is rotatably and slidably mounted on a shaft in the housing, such that, through suitable linkage, the shift finger is selectively rotated by the rotated select shaft into 1/2, 3/4, or 5/R shift positions, and then slid by the rotated shift shaft into the 1, 3 or 5 shift ratios in one direction, or the 2, 4 or R shift ratios in the other direction.

Transmission shift control apparatus

In a shift control arrangement for a manual transmission wherein dual cables lead from a floor-mounted shift control lever to dual select and shift shafts operatively connected to the transmission, a shift mechanism bearing a shift finger is rotatably and slidably mounted on a shaft in the housing, such that, through suitable linkage, the shift finger is selectively rotated by the select shaft into 1/2, 3/4, or 5/R shift positions, and then slid by the shift shaft into the 1, 3 or 5 shift ratios in one direction, or the 2, 4 or R shift ratios in the other direction. A reverse inhibitor mechanism operates in conjunction with a pin extending from the rotatable and slidable shift mechanism to prevent an inadvertent manual shift from 5 to R ratio positon, and to result in a shift from 5 to 4 instead.
