To provide a protective coat on a refrigerated sample collector for a corrosive environment a unitary frame includes a support unit with condenser and evaporator coils mounted to the support unit and an orifice connecting the condenser and evaporator coils. The evaporator coils, condenser coils and a restrictor are powder coated after being connected, whereby an effective seal is provided for the restrictor, condenser coils and evaporator coils after they are assembled to the support. The unitary frame can be easily removed or connected as a unit to the sample collector. The bottle rack for the sample collector is made by injection molding two halves of the rack each of which has a matching surface and a bottle positioning surface. The matching surfaces are fastened together by placing the matching surfaces together back to back whereby locating members are spaced apart a sufficient distance.

A peristaltic pump may be used for drawing at least one sample into the refrigerated sample collector and depositing said sample into at least one sample bottle. The peristaltic pump may include contoured tube guides to reduce movement of the peristaltic pump as a roller paddle rotates.

To pump fluid into sample containers, a distributor arm of a sample collector is calibrated as to position in a computer memory and is moved from position to position over different containers while a counter in computer memory keeps track of its position. When the distributor arm is over the designated container, samples are pumped into the container. To pump the fluid into the container, the rollers of a peristaltic pump are supported to prevent the rollers from compressing the tube more than the thickness of the walls of the tube. A tube holder rotates along with the roller assembly of the peristaltic pump and keeps the tube in line with the rollers.

To determine the average velocity of a fluid stream, an ultrasonic signal is transmitted into the fluid and reflected ultrasonic signal received. The signals are mixed with a frequency of the transmitted ultrasonic signals. A Fourier transform is performed on the signals, the largest coefficient used to normalize the signal and certain of the weighted signals are averaged.

A method of making a sensor wherein flexible conduit means is assembled with a fixture having a strain-sensitive film and electrical connections are made to the film whereby variations in fluid pressure in the conduit means can be detected.

Method of making a sensor

To select a designated bottle in a sampler, the distributor is calibrated as to position and the outlet of the distributor arm is moved over the desired bottle by counting changes in incremental angular movement of the distributor arm until it is over the bottle. The position of the distributor arm is recorded in memory. To calibrate the distributor, the arm is rotated against a stop member in a first direction, then in a second direction and the overrun of in excess of 360 degrees of the motion of the distributor arm is determined and corrected. A series of random numbers is generated for depositing of samples, the distributor is moved at designated times over the bottles in a random order to deposit a sample and the ordering of bottles is recorded. The rollers of a peristaltic pump are supported to prevent said rollers from compressing said tube more than the thickness of the walls of the tube. A functional module for a bubbler or pH probe or ultrasonic level detector may be connected to the housing.

Direct measurement ultrasonic velocity measuring system

To draw samples from a source of liquid, a pumping system measures the amount of liquid being pumped by detecting pump cycles and calculating the pumped liquid from this measurement and stored data including conduit size, pressure head and statistical data to correlate detected pump cycles with volume of liquid pumped. Pressure pulses caused by a peristaltic pump are sensed by a piezoelectric film positioned on an inlet conduit connecting the pump to the source of water and, when the liquid reaches a predetermined point determined by the nature of the pulses, the pulses are counted to determine the number of pump cycles.

Ultrasonic fluid velocity measuring system

To draw samples of liquid for later analysis, liquid is periodically pumped from the inlet port in coordination with initiating movement of a web of packaging material, folding the package material and sealing it to form a pouch. The liquid is pumped from the inlet port into the pouch and the pouch is sealed. The pumping means and the equipment for drawing the web are controlled so that the container corresponds in internal volume to the volume of liquid pumped into the container prior to sealing the container and identification is printed onto the web becomes part of the package for the liquid.
