A system and method of controlling corrosion of a heat exchanger, having a hot gas inlet and outlet and a cold side inlet and outlet. The method includes determining a temperature of the heat exchanger at a first selected location, controlling a temperature of a corrosion sensing device to a first selected temperature based on the temperature of the surface of the heat exchanger and determining a corrosion rate associated with the heat exchanger surface at the first selected location for the first selected temperature. The method also includes comparing the corrosion rate to an expected corrosion rate, determining a cold side fluid inlet temperature target for the heat exchanger based at least in part on the comparing, the determined corrosion; and controlling a cold side fluid inlet temperature based at least in part on the determined inlet temperature target, determined corrosion rate, and expected corrosion rate.

A structural low carbon steel in combination with and in contact with an aqueous MDEA solvent that includes as an amine-based chemical additive. When mixed with MDEA solvent to form a MDEA solution, the MDEA-based solution in contact with carbon steel reduces the corrosion rate of low carbon structural carbon steels having a carbon content greater than about 0.18% by weight is significantly reduced when the concentrations of CO, Oand heat stable salts (HSS) are controlled below critical amounts. The MDEA solution, when controlling the concentrations of CO, Oand HSS below critical amounts, suppresses the corrosion of carbon steel having a carbon content greater than about 0.18%. A smooth surface finish further suppresses the corrosion of the low carbon structural steel. When the CO, Oand HSS are maintained below critical values, a low carbon structural steel having a micropolished surface finish displayed improved corrosion resistance.

A method is provided for operating a diesel engine with reduced emissions. The method comprises combusting a first biodiesel blend fuel in a diesel engine resulting in the production of diesel exhaust gases containing NOx. The diesel exhaust gases are admixed with a second biodiesel blend fuel, and the second biodiesel blend fuel is hydrolyzed to form reducing agents. The diesel exhaust gases containing NOx are passed through an NOx-reducing catalyst to reduce the NOx through a selective catalytic reduction reaction with the reducing agents. The invention further provides a method for operating a diesel engine with reduced emissions, comprising combusting a first biodiesel blend fuel in a diesel engine resulting in the production of diesel exhaust gases containing NOx. The diesel exhaust gases containing NOx are passed through an NOx-reducing catalyst to reduce the NOx through a selective catalytic reduction reaction with the reducing agents.
