A light source useful for architectural lighting, general lighting, street lighting, or other lighting applications includes a plurality of light emitting diodes. A least some light emitting diodes can be sized between 30 microns and 500 microns. A plurality of micro-optics sized less than 1 millimeter are positioned over at least some of the plurality of light emitting diodes. A controller may be connected to selectively power groups of the plurality of light emitting diodes to provide different light beam patterns.

Low Z-height LED arrays with controllable light beams

In a projection display system, a polarizing beamsplitter can split an unpolarized light beam into a first internal beam and a second internal beam, which can have polarization states that are orthogonal. A polarization rotator, such as a half-wave plate, can rotate a plane of polarization of at least one of the first internal beam or the second internal beam. A beam aligner, such as a second polarizing beamsplitter, can change a propagation direction of at least one of the first internal beam or the second internal beam. The polarization rotator and the beam aligner each can adjust at least one of the first or second internal beams such that the first internal beam forms a first exiting beam and the second internal beam forms a second exiting beam. The first exiting beam and the second exiting beam can be adjacent and parallel and have parallel polarization states.

Projection display system and method

In a projection display system, a light-emitting diode (LED) can generate unpolarized light. A light guide can receive the unpolarized light from a perimeter of the light guide and guide the unpolarized light between a light emission surface and an opposing surface as guided light. The light guide can include a plurality of light-extraction features that can direct a portion of the guided light out of the light guide through the light emission surface as unpolarized emitted light. A polarizing film can reflect at least some of a first polarization state of the unpolarized emitted light into the light guide through the light emission surface and can transmit at least some of a second polarization state of the unpolarized emitted light through the polarizing film to form a polarized light beam. An angular reduction film can reduce a range of propagation angles of the polarized light beam.

A LED lighting module is described that is realized as a printed circuit assembly. The LED lighting module has a carrier with a strip of dielectric material and conductive circuit tracks printed on the dielectric material. Bare LED dies are mounted in a linear formation on the carrier. The width of the LED die formation does not exceed 0.75 mm and the area of the emission face of an LED die does not exceed 0.0625 mm2. Drivers are mounted on the carrier and are connected to drive the LED dies.

LED lighting module

Various embodiments include combined lens and safety enclosure apparatuses and methods for forming the apparatuses. In one example a combined lens and safety enclosure apparatus for a light-emitting diode (LED) module is disclosed. The enclosure apparatus includes at least one plastic-material-based optical-lens element mounted over a plurality of LED elements, where a distance between the optical-lens element and any portion of any one of the plurality of LED elements is spaced away from each other by at least 0.8 mm. A driver-on-board (DoB) subsystem, including an electronic circuit configured to provide power to the plurality of LED elements, has a plastic-material-based optical enclosure mounted over the DoB subsystem. A distance between the optical enclosure and any portion of any of the electronic circuit is spaced away from optical enclosure by at least 0.8 mm. Other devices and methods are described.

Optical enclosures for LED modules

A light engine and system are disclosed in which the light engine contains a core comprising an opening extending through opposing surfaces and a flexible printed circuit board (PCB). The PCB includes a flexible body disposed on an outside of the core and having independently addressable sets of illumination sources mounted thereto, and flexible legs extending from the body and through the opening. The legs are bent such that a terminal portion of each leg is substantially parallel to the opposing surfaces of the core. Independent control of the sets of illumination sources is provided via the legs. The body is separated into segments, each on a different section of the outside and containing body contacts electrically independent of the body contacts of each other segment. Each leg is associated with a different segment, and contains leg contacts on the terminal portion in electrical contact with the associated body contacts.

Light engines with dynamically controllable light distribution

A luminaire can include a curved light guide plate including a first receiving surface, an emitting surface, a major surface opposing the emitting surface, second and third receiving surfaces, the first receiving surface extending in a first dimension between the major surface and the emitting surface and extending in a second dimension between the second and third receiving surfaces, the first receiving surface, emitting surface, and major surface including a positive, non-zero radius of curvature (R) and the second and third receiving surfaces generally planar, and a plurality of LEDs positioned to emit light into one or more of the first: receiving surface, second receiving surface, third receiving surface, or a fourth receiving surface, the fourth receiving surface opposing the first receiving surface.

Curved light-guide optics for LED lighting

A LED lighting system includes a power supply, a LED controller, and a light guide plate having a top, a bottom, and an edge. A printed circuit board connected to the power supply is positioned at least partially under the bottom of the light guide plate. At least one surface-emitting LED is positioned on the printed circuit board adjacent to the light guide plate and directed to emit light vertically. A partially transmissive reflector is attached to extend between the top of the edge of the light guide plate and the printed circuit board to direct vertically emitted light from the at least one surface-emitting LED into the edge of the light guide plate.

Lateral edge-lit light-guide optics for LED lighting

An apparatus and system are disclosed and include a vehicle interior lighting system comprising that includes a light engine with a plurality of independently addressable light emitting diode (LED) segments, each independently addressable LED segment including at least one LED, a flexible printed circuit board (PCB) having a base and plurality of legs extending from the base, each leg supporting an independently addressable LED segment, and a light guide plate configured to provide illumination from the plurality of independently addressable LED segments inside the vehicle. A processor may be configured to receive information from a o vehicle sensing system, a vehicle communication system, or a detection system, and may generate a signal. A controller may be configured to provide one or more light control signals to modify at least one light characteristic of at least one of the plurality of independently addressable LED segments based on the signal.

A luminaire can include a curved light guide plate including a first receiving surface, an emitting surface, a major surface opposing the emitting surface, second and third receiving surfaces, the first receiving surface extending in a first dimension between the major surface and the emitting surface and extending in a second dimension between the second and third receiving surfaces, the first receiving surface, emitting surface, and major surface including a positive, non-zero radius of curvature (R) and the second and third receiving surfaces generally planar, and a plurality of LEDs positioned to emit light into one or more of the first receiving surface, second receiving surface, third receiving surface, or a fourth receiving surface, the fourth receiving surface opposing the first receiving surface.

Curved light-guide optics for LED street lighting

A light emitting diode (LED) may include a conductive via in a first portion of an epitaxial layer and a first contact on a second portion of the epitaxial layer. The first portion and the second portion may be separated by an isolation region. The LED may include a transparent conductive layer on the epitaxial layer.

High density interconnect for segmented LEDs
