The present disclosure describes anti-needle stick safety mechanism that is passively activated during the normal course of giving an injection. In one embodiment, the device includes a spring member coupled at a proximal end to a needle member and at a distal end to a needle cover. The passive activation of the device is triggered when the needle is inserted to a minimum depth into the patient's tissue to unleash the force of a compressed spring to urge a needle cover towards the distal end of the needle. As the needle is withdrawn from the tissue, the needle cover advances to the end of the needle and as it partially clears the end of the needle, it adopts an orientation that prevents the needle tip from re-emerging from the needle cover.

A folding panel needle guard comprises front and rear panels coupled together at hinges, a collar attached to the front panels at hinges, a guard base element coupled to the rear panels at hinges, a hub and a spring to unfold and lock the front and rear panels in a co-linear needle shielded configuration. A safety device for a medicine cartridge comprising a body for receiving a cartridge, a guard for covering a used needle, a plunger to dispense medicine from the cartridge and a spring for activation of the guard. The trigger fingers of the guard are spaced to avoid or minimize contact with the spring flange during assembly to avoid trigger finger unseating. An elongated trigger finger head enables the device to activate for all known syringe and syringe plunger tolerances. The spring end coils have larger diameter than the inner coils to reduce the likelihood of the spring end coil end interfering with the cartridge subassembly. Syringe capture features are configured to retain a syringe having a small round or conventional cut flange in place during use and reduce the stress on the syringe flange during insertion while maintaining the ability to hold the syringe in place during use.

A passive needle safety device for protecting the needle of an injection syringe after medication has been delivered to a patient comprising a body that can hold a syringe, a telescoping guard fitting over the body, and a spring deployed between the guard and body such that the guard is urged in an extend configuration distally relative to the body, the improvement comprising, trigger fingers for holding the guard and body together in an un-extended configuration against the force of the spring, and a plunger rod with a plunger head which pushes against the trigger fingers, the head having an angled surface that provides a lateral component of force to the trigger fingers to displace them from the latched configuration to an unlatched configuration.

A device is disclosed for introducing a flexible elongated element through at least two portions of a subject. In a preferred embodiment, the device includes a proximal end and a distal end, and an advancement unit for longitudinally advancing the flexible elongated element toward the distal end of the device such that a proximal end of the elongated element may exit from the distal end of the device with sufficient force to pass through the subject. The device also includes a curved die at the distal end of the device for imparting a looping configuration to portions of the flexible elongated element exiting the distal end of the device, and a curved guide at the distal end for receiving the looped flexible elongated element as it returns to the distal end of the device. In a further feature of the invention, a cutting mechanism is provided to permit the looped flexible elongated element to be separated from the remainder of the flexible elongated element. And in a further feature of the invention, the cutting mechanism is adapted to deform the trailing end of the looped flexible elongated element so that the trailing end is forced distally, toward the subject being sutured.

Surgical suturing instrument and method of use

A device is disclosed for introducing a flexible elongated element through at least two portions of a subject. In an embodiment, the device includes a proximal end and a distal end, as well as an advancement unit for longitudinally advancing the flexible elongated element toward the distal end such that a proximal end of the elongated element may pass from the distal end of said device with sufficient force to pass through the portions of the subject. The device also includes a securing unit for variably adjusting a securing force applied by the flexible elongated element to secure together the portions of the subject.

A device is disclosed for passing a flexible elongated element through a portion of a subject. In an embodiment, the device includes structure for retaining said flexible elongated element; and advancement structure for longitudinally advancing the flexible elongated element from a proximal end of the device toward a distal end of the device with sufficient force to pass the flexible elongated element through the portion of the subject. The advancement structure includes at least one drive wheel for contacting the flexible elongated element, and further wherein the at least one drive wheel contains a peripheral groove therein for receiving the flexible elongated element so as to provide increased contact area between the at least one drive wheel and the flexible elongated element.

Apparatus for approximating and closing the walls of a hole or puncture in a physiological shell structure which, in one preferred form, comprises a pair of components that manipulate wire suture. The first component, sometimes referred to herein as a suture introducer, locates the edges of the hole and passes wire suture through them. The second component, sometimes referred to herein as a suture tensioner, gathers the free ends of the wire suture and twists them together, which in turn closes the hole. After the wire suture has been twisted sufficiently to effect closure, the excess wire is trimmed away. The apparatus can deploy more than one wire suture at a time if desired. Using self-locating features and tactile feedback, the apparatus is particularly well adapted to access remote surgical sites.
