A method of preparing a coated optical fiber for coupling to a face of an optical device includes placing the coated fiber so that it extends through a stripping station, a cleaning station and a cleaving station. A stripper at the stripping station is brought into engagement with the fiber and relative motion between the fiber and the stripping station, the cleaning station and the cleaving station is effected lengthwise of the fiber, whereby the coating is stripped from a medial length segment of the fiber as the cleaning device at the cleaning station is activated for cleaning fragments of coating material from the medial length segment of the fiber as the medial length segment passes through the cleaning station and the cleaning device is deactivated and stripping is discontinued. The fiber is positioned with the medial length segment at the cleaving station, the fiber is clamped at a location that is upstream of the cleaving station with respect to the direction from the stripping station to the cleaving station, and the fiber is cleaved within the medial length segment, thereby providing the fiber with a freshly cleaved end region.

Apparatus and method for preparing a coated optical fiber

A condensation nucleus counter (CNC) device implemented with a multi-directional fluid flow system is configured in a compact, conical geometry. A saturation region includes an inlet that delivers into an annular pool a sample stream of air containing small-diameter particles. The stream of air flows out and expands radially from the inlet and mixes with a working vapor to become saturated in the saturation region. The saturated fluid mixture then flows to a condensation region defined by spaced-apart inner and outer radially converging walls having a conical geometry, thereby forming an annular flow volume of decreasing cross sectional area in the direction of fluid flow to the outlet of the CNC device. The working vapor condenses on the small-diameter particles to enlarge their sizes with less tendency to condense on the inner walls of the condensation region.

Condensation nucleus counter with multi-directional fluid flow system

A particle counter (10) passes a sample stream of a carrier gas or fluid containing particles (72) through an elongated, flattened nozzle (16) and into a view volume (18) formed by an intersection of the sample stream and a laser beam (13). Particles entrained in the sample stream scatter light rays while passing through the view volume. The scattered light is collected by an optical system (26) and focused on to a detector (40). The magnitude of signal coming from the detector is indicative of the particle size. To correct for variances in particle velocity and light beam intensity across the view volume, flow aperturing is used. Flow aperture modeling (Eqs. 1-7) provides a format for designing the nozzle such that the lateral velocity profile matches the laser beam lateral intensity profile, thereby providing uniform detection sensitivity to laser light scattered from monodisperse particles distributed laterally across the view volume. Uniform detection sensitivity of monodisperse particles provides accurate particle sizing resolution.

Flow apertured intracavity laser particle detector

A particle counter of the condensation nucleus type wherein a primary stream of fluent material containing particles enlarged by vapor condensate of a working fluid flow through a viewing volume. A secondary stream of fluent material, termed purge gas, surrounds the primary stream of fluent material as the primary stream traverses the view volume, thereby providing a boundary layer of fluent material, reducing turbulence of the primary stream. The two streams are merged after passing through the view volume and the merged stream is drawn into one or more coalescent filters for conversion of vapor to working fluid which is then recycled for reuse, thereby extending the life of the working fluid and preventing escape of vapor which might contaminate the ambient environment.

Condensation nucleus counter having vapor stabilization and working

A condensation nucleus counter features an entropy control mechanism to regulate the entropy of a vaporized fluid present in a saturator, thereby facilitating supersaturation of the same about particulates entrained in a sample gas stream before the same passes through a condenser. The condensation nucleus counter includes a supply of sample gas, conduits adapted to allow the sample gas stream to flow therethrough, a saturator, a condenser and an optical detector, all of which are in fluid communication with each other. The manifold is disposed between the conduit and the saturator, and also a temperature control device. The manifold comprises a feed chamber and a plurality of channels positioned so that the sample gas stream entering the feed chambers evenly divides into a plurality of flows, with each flow entering the saturator. The temperature control device regulates the temperature difference between the flows entering the saturator and the vaporized fluid contained so as to be within a specified range. In this fashion, supersaturation occurs near the point where the sample flows enter the saturator.
