Various implementations of a method of forming an electrochemical cell include providing a first electrode, a second electrode, a separator between the first and second electrodes, and an electrolyte in a cell container. The first electrode can include silicon-dominant electrochemically active material. The silicon-dominant electrochemically active material can include greater than 50% silicon by weight. The method can also include exposing at least a part of the electrochemical cell to CO, and forming a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on the first electrode using the CO.

Systems and methods for use of nitrogen as a stabilization gas of polyacrylonitrile are disclosed and may include forming an active material layer comprising silicon particles and polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and heating the active material layer including PAN using nitrogen as a stabilization gas. The active material layer may be pyrolyzed at a temperature of 500° C. or more or between 500° C. and 750° C. The active material layer may be pyrolyzed by heating in a nitrogen gas environment or an argon gas environment. The active material layer may include 50% or more silicon by weight. The active layer may be heated at a temperature of 350° C. or more, at a temperature of 300° C. or more, or a temperature of 250° C. or more. A battery may include the electrode. The active material layer may be on a metal current collector that includes one or more of: copper, nickel, and aluminum.

Method and system for use of nitrogen as a stabilization gas of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)

The present application describes the use of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) fluorinating precursor and/or an SEI fluorinating compound to coat an electrode material and create an artificial SEI layer. These modifications may increase surface passivation of the electrodes, SEI robustness, and structural stability of the silicon-containing electrodes.

The silicon particles may have outer regions extending about 20 nm deep from the surfaces, the outer regions comprising an amount of aluminum such that a bulk measurement of the aluminum comprises at least about 0.01% by weight of the silicon particles. The bulk measurement of the aluminum may provide the amount of aluminum present at least in the outer regions.

Systems and methods for multiple carbon precursors for enhanced battery electrode robustness may include an electrode having an active material, the active material including two or more carbon precursor materials, wherein the carbon precursor materials have different pyrolysis temperatures. A battery may include the electrode. The carbon precursor materials may include polyimide (PI) and polyamide-imide (PAI). The active material may be pyrolyzed at a temperature such that a first carbon precursor material is partially pyrolyzed and a second carbon precursor material is completely pyrolyzed. The carbon precursor materials may include two or more of PI, PAI, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and sodium alginate. The active material may include silicon constituting at least 50% of weight of a formed anode after pyrolysis. The active material may include silicon constituting up to 97% of weight of a formed electrode after pyrolysis.

Method and system for multiple carbon precursors for enhanced battery electrode robustness

The present disclosure relates to prelithiated Si electrodes, methods of prelithiating Si electrodes, and use of prelithiated electrodes in electrochemical devices are described. There are several characteristics of electrode prelithiation that enable the superior battery performance. First, a prelithiated silicon anode is already in its expanded state during SEI formation, and therefore less of the SEI layer breaks down and reforms during cycling. Second, the prelithiated anode has a lower anode potential, which may also help the cycle performance of an electrochemical device.
