An adsorbent for removing COfrom a gas mixture, the adsorbent comprising alumina and a carbonate compound where the carbonate to alumina IR absorbance intensity ratio is reduced by washing the adsorbent with water. The disclosure also describes a method of making adsorbent particles, process for removing COfrom a gas mixture using the adsorbent, and an adsorption unit using the adsorbent.

Alkali-promoted activated alumina adsorbent

Base treated aluminas exhibit improved COcapacity over untreated aluminas. Base treated aluminas prepared by physically mixing alumina and base during forming have (1) a higher surface area, (2) less hydrothermal aging, (3) improved COcapacity and (4) lower cost than base treated aluminas produced by aqueous impregnation. A method for removing at least COand water from a gas stream includes providing an adsorbent formed from a process comprising physically mixing activated alumina solids and solid salts of alkali metals, alkaline earth metals or ammonium ion; and contacting the gas stream with the adsorbent.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is removed from a nitrogen and CO containing gas stream such as feed air to an air separation process for recovery of a nitrogen product gas stream or a nitrogen product gas stream from an air separation process by adsorbing CO from said gas stream before or after separation of oxygen from said gas stream to produce a product gas stream containing less than 5 ppb of CO by contacting said gas stream With a solid adsorbent such as a Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Ag, Pd, Co, Pt or Au exchanged zeolite and periodically regenerating the adsorbent by desorption of CO therefrom under a flow of regenerating gas, and, if said gas stream is said feed air, separating oxygen therefrom to produce said nitrogen product.

Purification of gases

A binderless X-type zeolite is used in a process for the reduction of the level of carbon dioxide and/or N O in a gaseous mixture, the zeolite being obtained by converting the binder in a bound zeolite to zeolite such that the ratio of the adsorption capacity for carbon dioxide of the binderless zeolite to the adsorption capacity of the bound zeolite is greater than the weight ratio of the level of zeolite in the binderless zeolite to the level in the bound zeolite.

Process for reducing the level of carbon dioxide in a gaseous mixture

Carbon dioxide, water, nitrous oxide and optionally ethylene are removed from a feed air stream by a temperature swing adsorption using a first adsorbent such as alumina to adsorb water, a second adsorbent such as 13X zeolite to adsorb carbon dioxide, and a third adsorbent such as binderless calcium exchanged X zeolite to adsorb nitrous oxide and optionally ethylene, prior to cryogenic separation of the purified air stream.

Purification of air

Carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are removed from a gas stream such as air or nitrogen by adsorbing water and carbon dioxide on a solid absorbent of alumina, or zeolite and oxiding carbon monoxide over a solid catalyst to carbon dioxide and adsorbing the resulting carbon dioxide and chemisorbing the hydrogen on the catalyst, which may be palladium on alumina.

A process for removing nitrogen oxides, as well as water and carbon dioxide, from gas streams containing at least 0.2 ppm by volume of nitrogen oxides by passing the gas stream through an alumina adsorbent and a zeolite adsorbent, preferably 13X-zeolite. The process has utility in front end cleanup of air prior to cryogenic distillation of the air where nitrogen oxides would otherwise freeze under the cryogenic processing.

A pressure swing adsorption process for absorbing CO.sub.2 from a gaseous mixture containing CO.sub.2 comprising introducing the gaseous mixture at a first pressure into a reactor containing a modified alumina adsorbent maintained at a temperature ranging from 100.degree. C. and 500.degree. C. to adsorb CO.sub.2 to provide a CO.sub.2 laden alumina adsorbent and a CO.sub.2 depleted gaseous mixture and contacting the CO.sub.2 laden adsorbent with a weakly adsorbing purge fluid at a second pressure which is lower than the first pressure to desorb CO.sub.2 from the CO.sub.2 laden alumina adsorbent. The modified alumina adsorbent which is formed by depositing a solution having a pH of 3.0 or more onto alumina and heating the alumina to a temperature ranging from 100.degree. C. and 600.degree. C., is not degraded by high concentrations of water under process operating conditions.

Carbon dioxide pressure swing adsorption process using modified alumina

A process for the adsorption of at least carbon dioxide, water and oxides of nitrogen and preferably acetylene from a feed gas, comprises contacting the feed gas with an adsorbent mixture of a zeolite and an alumina. The process may be operated as a swing adsorption process comprising contacting the gas with the adsorbent at a first temperature and pressure to adsorb at least carbon dioxide, water and oxides of nitrogen therefrom and periodically regenerating the adsorbent by reducing the pressure and or increasing the temperature to which the adsorbent is exposed.

Use of zeolites and alumina in adsorption processes

Pressure swing adsorption to remove CO.sub.2 from a gas stream is conducted using an improved alumina obtained by impregnating a starting alumina with a basic solution having a pH of at least 9, e.g. of a basic compound such as KHCO.sub.3, and drying at a temperature low enough to avoid decomposing the basic compound to a form which adsorbs CO.sub.2 such that the compound does not regenerate under reduced pressure purging.
