A system for delivering electrostatic toner to an image receiving member includes a traveling electrostatic wave toner conveyor with a delivery segment adjacent to the image receiving member. The delivery segment includes parallel traveling wave conveyor electrodes and nudging electrodes. The conveyor electrodes are connected to a source of DC-biased multiphase electric power to establish a traveling electrostatic wave in the delivery segment to move toner in a synchronous surfing mode. The nudging electrodes are connected to a source of repulsive DC voltage of the same polarity as the toner to slow and deflect toner toward the image receiving member. The delivery segment further includes overlaid barrier electrodes to maintain uniform delivery of toner to all apertures in an electronically addressable printhead.

Electrostatic toner conditioning and controlling means II

A transport system for charging and delivering right-sign electrostatic toner to an image receiving member includes a toner conveyor having a loading/filtering segment and a delivery, segment. Each segment has a number of parallel electrodes connected to a DC-biased multiphase electric power to establish a traveling electrostatic wave to move toner along the segment. The loading/filtering segment gathers toner from a supply and feeds unipolar toner to the delivery segment. The delivery segment delivers right sign toner to the image receiving member. The traveling wave in the loading/filtering segment moves toner in either a synchronous surfing mode or an asynchronous hunching mode to the delivery segment. The traveling wave in the delivery segment moves toner in an asynchronous hunching mode to the image receiving member. The traveling wave and the speed of toner movement in the loading/filtering segment and the delivery segment are subject to control by means of the bias, amplitude, and frequency of the electric power on the respective segments. First and second toner extractors adjacent to the conveyor are electrically biased to extract therefrom, respectively, wrong-sign toner before it reaches the image receiving member, and unused right-sign toner after it passes the image receiving member.

Apparatus for creating powder images. An image forming member and a toner delivery system are supported opposite each other. The images are formed by the image forming member along a first direction. The toner delivery system includes a toner transport for moving toner particles from a supply to a zone opposite the image forming member. The transport moves along a second direction which is non-parallel to the first direction.

A direct electrostatic printing process which is insensitive to the polarity of the toner material is disclosed. The donor member of the printing apparatus includes alternate narrow and wide electrodes. The narrow electrodes are electrically pulsed to eject toner of one polarity in proximity with an array of electrically controlled apertures in a printhead, and unused toner are returned to the donor surface with low momentum to avoid dislodgment of other toner from the donor on impact. Toner ejection is accomplished with a three segment voltage pulse, including an impulse segment to detach toner of one polarity from the donor and accelerate the toner particles toward a printhead, a zero voltage segment during which the ejected toner drifts in the presence of electric fields produced by voltages applied to the printhead and toner receiving member, and a final low voltage segment of the same polarity as the first impulse segment to decelerate toner returning to the donor to a low landing speed and thereby avoid dislodgement of other toner from the donor. The donor structure and ejector pulse renders aperture type direct printing stable for long periods of time without frequent cleaning of the printhead.

A toner delivery method and apparatus for delivering highly charged toner containing a minimum of wrong sign toner to a donor roll structure. The donor roll structure, in turn, delivers the toner to an image receiver or a DEP printhead structure. A magnetic brush is utilized for loading toner particles on the donor roll structure. A magnetic cleaning brush is provided for redistributing unused toner on the donor roll structure. The donor roll and magnetic brushes are positioned to form a cavity which is filled with developer material which prevents the formation of carrier bead chains.

A scavengeless development system in which toner is detached from a donor belt and attracted to latent electrostatic images carried by an image receiver positioned adjacent the belt. Generation of a controlled powder cloud of toner particles is effected using AC electric fields created by applying an AC voltage to an embedded electrode structure stationarily positioned behind the donor belt. Unused toner is removed from the donor belt in a manner which avoids history effects due to accumulation of highly charged, relatively small toner particles on the donor belt.

A charge pattern is formed on a dielectric and imagewise developed using one or more DEP printers.

Direct electrostatic printing apparatus including a cylindrically shaped donor structure for delivering imaging material such as toner particles to a printhead forming an integral part of the printing device. The printhead structure includes control electrodes and a shield electrode structure secured to opposite sides of an insulative base. The donor structure has a relatively small diameter compared to such devices of the prior art making it impossible to deliver adequate quantities of toner to some of the printhead apertures using electrical biasing techniques of the prior art. In the device disclosed, the printhead apertures are biased according to the aperture spacing from the donor structure. The magnitude of the bias or its duration applied to the apertures farther from the donor structure surface is such that toner delivery to those apertures is equal to that of all other apertures.

A printhead for electrostatic printing comprises a membrane, made of a non-crystalline ceramic material, defining a first surface and a second surface, and defining a plurality of apertures therein. A plurality of addressable segmented electrodes are disposed on the first surface around substantially the periphery of an aperture on the first surface, each segment of the addressable segmented electrodes being isolated from each other segment. A conductive layer is disposed on the second surface around substantially the periphery of at least one aperture on the second surface. The ceramic membrane facilitates the incorporation of active electronic devices on the printhead.

A functional color graphic printer wherein Traveling Cloud Development (T.C.D.) is utilized for developing Ionographically formed color images. The high sensitivity and scavengeless character of the T.C.D. process enables the use of a low voltage imaging system such as ion deposition processes such as CorJet or IBIS or IBIS II to form three or more latent images simultaneously or sequentially on a single dielectric receiver. The charge levels of the elements of the latent images may been varied in order to produce different color intensities for each component of a composite image. Alternatively, the different color intensities can be achieved by changing the electrical biases applied to the traveling cloud developer systems.

An architecture is disclosed for controlling printing elements to deposit a variable amount of toner onto a given area of paper. The architecture includes a pixel memory for determining a gray level for each pixel in a row, and a counter for incrementing a gray level. A comparator compares a memory location corresponding to a certain pixel with the output of the counter, and the comparison result is then applied to a printing element corresponding to the pixel.

A Direct Electrostatic Printer including a vacuum drum for transporting copy sheets past a plurality of DEP printhead structures for selectively printing various types of images. For example, black only images, highlight color images or process color images may be printed. To this end there are provided a plurality of printheads each utilizing a different color toner. Each printhead structure may be selectively actuated depending upon whether its color is to be used in forming the final image. Thus, where a process color image is to be formed, all of the printheads may be actuated and where black images are to be created only the black printhead is actuated.
