A unitary structure for packaging a shock sensitive article within a container is provided. The structure has a side flange adapted to contact a side end portion of the article and a number of sidewall structures disposed about the periphery of the flange which extend over the side end portion of the article to contactingly support the article. Each of the sidewalls cushions the article against shocks by having an outboard wall which operably and supportingly contacts the container and a bridge section integral with the inboard wall and the outboard wall to cushioningly space the outboard wall from the inboard wall. The structure also includes a crush depression integral to the flange, inward of the sidewall and generally extending away from the article to supportingly contact a lateral sidewall of the container thereby forming a cushion distance. The crush button is configured to absorb shock loading of the article directed generally toward the sidewall.

Packaging for fragile articles within container

A unitary fragility packaging article for packaging at least one shock sensitive item within a container having multiple panels, includes in a preferred embodiment a platform portion defining a floor for supporting at least a portion of the item and having a peripheral edge including generally parallel front and rear edges and generally parallel side edges; a plurality of ribs disposed on the platform portion to project from the floor and to divide the floor into a plurality of item-supporting cells; and at least one of the cells being provided with at least a portion of a crush depression for forming a cushion distance between the floor and an adjacent panel of the container. Other features provided as needed include crush depressions in sidewalls and flaps as well as in the main platform ribs or cell partitions with controlled rigidity, cell floors with relatively flexible portions defined by troughs, inclined flap cell walls and corresponding tapered cell ribs for easier insertion of fragile items, strengthened upper ends of flap and sidewall cells, structurally strengthened central divider ribs on main platforms and lids, and selective cushioning for the main platform and flaps.

Thermoformed fragility packaging

A structure for packaging a shock sensitive article within a container having a plurality of panels includes a flange having a bottom surface, and a peripheral portion including a pair of opposing sides, and the flange defines an article containing space. A first sidewall and a second sidewall are located along the opposing sides of the flange, the first and second sidewalls each include an inboard wall integral with the peripheral portion of the flange, an outboard wall having an article end and a container end depending from the bottom surface, and a bridge portion joining corresponding edges of the inboard wall and the outboard wall to form a cushion space. At least one column formation is formed integrally with the first sidewall and the second sidewall, each of the column formations has an inside wall and an outside wall, and extends from the inboard wall into the article containing space to be closer to the opposing column formation than the inboard walls are to each other. The inside wall is configured for supportingly extending over an end portion of the article.

Fragility packaging article with controlled resiliency

A unitary packaging structure for a shock sensitive article, including a platform portion adapted to support the article and having a peripheral portion, a sidewall structure forming an enclosure around the platform portion, the sidewall structure including an inner wall being joined to the peripheral portion, and an outer wall peripherally spaced from the inner wall, the inner wall being relatively shorter than the outer wall so that the platform portion is held a specified cushion distance above a lower edge of the outer wall, and at least one collapsibility control device for selectively releasing air compressed beneath the package when the package is subjected to shock loading while disposed in a shipping container, the control device controlling the collapsibility of the package.
