An oxygen scavenging composition of a carrier, such as a polymer, which is permeable to both oxygen and water or water vapor and an oxygen scavenging compound of an organic compound or salt thereof dispersed relatively uniformly throughout the polymer in an amount effective to act as an oxygen scavenger. The oxygen scavenging compound is activated for scavenging oxygen by contact with water or water vapor which permeates into or through the carrier. Also, a catalyzing agent is included in an amount sufficient to increase the rate of oxygen scavenging by the organic compound. The organic compound and catalyzing agent are preferably maintained in a dry state by freeze drying or microencapsulation until the organic compound is activated for oxygen scavenging by contact with water or water vapor.

Metal catalyzed ascorbate compounds as oxygen scavengers

A liner composition for a potable fluid container closure element which includes an inorganic sulfite such as sodium sulfite and/or a tocopherol compound such as dl-.alpha.-tocopherol (vitamin E) for preventing off-flavors due to the presence of aldehydes in the fluid. Also, a potable fluid container of a reservoir element for containing a potable fluid, the reservoir element having an opening, a closure element capable of being attached to the opening, and the liner composition associated with the closure element. Also, a method of improving the taste of a potable fluid such as bottled water by use of the container and one of the previously described liner compositions associated therewith. Also, an improved method for processing the composition into closure liners based upon the prevention of the development of off-flavor-causing substances therein.

An oxygen scavenging packages and containers which comprise a composition of a carrier, such as a polymer, which is permeable to both oxygen and water or water vapor and an oxygen scavenging compound of an organic compound or salt thereof dispersed relatively uniformly throughout the polymer in an amount effective to act as an oxygen scavenger. The oxygen scavenging compound is a salicylic acid chelate or complex of a transition metal or a salt thereof. The oxygen scavenging composition is activated for scavenging oxygen by contact with water or water vapor which permeates into or through the carrier. A reducing agent of an ascorbate compound may be added to enhance the performance of the salicylic acid chelate or complex. The oxygen scavenging compound may be added to the composition in a dry state, and is inactive until activated for oxygen scavenging by contact with water or water vapor.

Thermoplastic synthetic polymeric compositions of certain polyurethanes, polyamides or chlorinated polyolefins, having processing temperatures in the range of about 150.degree. to 325.degree. F., can be modified by the addition of a millable thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer thereto to lower the processing temperature by 10.degree. to 30.degree. F. or more. This modification enables the thermoplastic composition to be processed on conventional calendering or extrusion equipment with a lesser amount of energy or with better performance. Also, coated fabrics of such thermoplastic compositions and a fiber reinforcement.

Calenderable thermoplastic compositions containing millable linear

An oxygen scavenging composition of a polymer which is permeable to both oxygen and water or water vapor, and an oxygen scavenging material of an amino polycarboxylic acid chelate or complex of a transition metal, or salt thereof, dispersed relatively uniformly throughout the polymer in an amount effective to act as an oxygen scavenger when activated for scavenging oxygen by contact with water or water vapor which permeates the polymer. A preferred oxygen scavenging compound is ferrous EDTA or salts thereof. Also, an ascorbate compound may be used as a preservative or augmenter for the oxygen scavenging compound.

Amino polycarboxylic acid compounds as oxygen scavengers

The processing temperature of linear thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers prepared from a polycarbonate polyol, a polyether polyol, an extender and a disocyanate compound which has been modified by reaction with a low molecular weight diol to form a modified diisocyanate compound prior to reaction with the other components of the elastomer, can be reduced by adding a millable thermoplastic linear polyurethane elastomer thereto. These materials possess an optimum combination of hydrolytic stability, toughness, flexibiity and low temperature processing characteristics.

Calenderable thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer compositions

Flexible polyurethane foam prepared from foam forming compositions of a polyether polyol, an organic isocyanate compound, a blowing agent, and a curing agent of a melamine derivative in an amount effective to rapidly cure the resultant foam and improve the compression set properties of the foam, the amount of curing agent generally ranging from about 0.01 up to about 2 parts by weight based on 100 parts polyether polyol. Also, flame retardant polyether polyurethane foam prepared from foam forming components of a polyether polyol, an organic isocyanate compound, water, a liquid phosphorus ester in an amount of about 4 to 10 parts by weight and the curing agent in an amount of 0.4 to 2 parts by weight, each based on 100 parts by weight of the polyether polyol in the composition. Methods for rapidly curing flexible polyether-derived foam in situ by adding to the foam forming composition an ammonia containing material having a decomposition temperature below the temperature of the highest reaction exotherm of the foam-forming composition and decomposing the ammonia containing material by exposure to the heat of the exotherm produced by reaction of the foam-forming components to release ammonia to cure the foam by contact therewith.

Rapid cure of polyurethane foam with ammonium containing materials

Compositions and methods for providing a flexible flame retardant polyether polyurethane foam prepared from foam forming components of a polyether polyol, an organic isocyanate compound, water, a liquid phosphorus ester in an amount of about 4 to 10 parts by weight and melamine in an amount of 1 to 5 parts by weight, each based on 100 parts by weight of the polyether polyol in the composition. Between 15 and 500 percent by weight melamine is used to replace a minor portion of the amount of ester (i.e., less than half) which would normally be used to achieve substantially the same degree of flame retardance in the foam.
