Intrinsically calibrated friction mensuration device has a drive unit with controllable motive member, configured to receive a controllable propulsion force, and to apply tractive force by a Class 1 lever to a weighted test piece. A force engine couples to the motive member, and applies the controllable propulsion force. The device includes a controller imposing a propulsion control signal actuating the force engine to produce the propulsion force. A force sensor joins drive unit and test piece, producing a force signal responsive to a sensed force between drive unit and test piece. The sensed force includes hydroplaning SCOF and hydroplaning DCOF. A method includes applying an increasing tractive force to a test piece at rest; measuring the tractive force; identifying the maximum tractive force applied at incipient motion; identifying the transition between the resting test piece and incipient motion; determining the hydroplaning SCOF; continuing motion; and determining the hydroplaning DCOF.

Intrinsically-calibrated tribometer

A strain sensor for determining a strain experienced by a body under test in response to forces exerted on the body-under-test. The strain sensor comprises an interface member mounted on a surface of the body-under-test and a SAW sensor mounted on a surface of the interface member. The strain in the body-under-test is translated to strain in the SAW sensor and determined by the SAW sensor. The strain in the SAW sensor is responsive to the strain in the body-under-test.

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) device package and method for packaging a SAW device provide a surface excited device having a small footprint, low cost and fabricated according to a unique manufacturing process. A substrate including a SAW active area on a first side is bonded to another similar sized substrate with a space sufficient to allow the propagation of the SAW on a top surface of the substrate. The two substrates have similar thermal expansion coefficients such that stress from the sealing process is minimized. The two substrates are sealed using either a low melting point glass or an organic compound such that conductive pathways exist through the seal allowing the internal device to access an external electrical connection.

An embodiment of a fuser for heating media includes a fuser roll including an outer portion having a first outer surface; a voltage source connected to the outer portion and adapted to supply voltage to the outer portion to heat the first outer surface; a pressure roll having a second outer surface; and a nip between the first and second outer surfaces. The first and second outer surfaces are adapted to contact a medium at the nip.

Polystyrene baler for extreme compaction of expanded polystyrene or other similar materials where a ram forcibly acts to compress the expanded polystyrene material into a narrowing chamber where the narrowing chamber walls further act to compress the expanded polystyrene material to allow for air or gases trapped in the polystyrene material to escape so that a densely packed polystyrene bale is formed. A continuous bale is formed which can be broken or cut into desired lengths or weights. Vertically aligned walls of the bale chamber can be hydraulically actuated to accommodate the degree of compaction desired.

Method of baling and compacting material having a form memory

A semiconductor die attach adhesive is provided which is formed of a plurality of spacers formed in a suspension of silver filled glass. In one embodiment of this invention, the spacers are spheres. The spacers utilized in one embodiment of this invention have a melting temperature below the temperature at which the solvents are evaporated from the die attach adhesive. In this manner, as the solvents are driven from the silver filled glass during the die attach operation, thus causing the volume of the silver filled glass to decrease, the spacers utilized in this invention partially melt, thus decreasing their thickness. This decreased thickness of the spacers decreases the separation between the die and the substrate, thus preventing the formation of voids within the die attach adhesive. In one embodiment, the spacers are formed of a lead/tin alloy. In another embodiment of this invention, the spacers are formed of a lead/tin/bismuth alloy, and in yet another embodiment of this invention the spacers are formed of lead/tin/bismuth eutectic.
