An implant for insertion within a maxillofacial bone of a patient including a tapered body and one or more threads formed along the body. The one or more threads on one or more lead threads include multiple thread forms including both three-dimensional stabilization thread and standard thread (e.g. v-thread, buttress thread, etc.) forms. The one or more threads including the multiple thread forms provides for maximizing the restriction of lateral movement of the implant within a full or partial osteotomy.

Embodiments include a method for promoting selective tissue attachment to medical implants. By treating implant surfaces where tissue attachment is desired with tissue attachment promoting treatments, and treating implant surfaces where tissue attachment is not desired with tissue attachment inhibiting treatments, selective tissue attachment to medical implants may be achieved. Also, embodiments include an implant with at least one tissue contacting surface and at least one secondary surface where tissue attachment is not desired, and appropriate tissue attachment promoting or inhibiting treatments on the surfaces.

The present application is directed to devices and methods for correcting a spinal deformity. A spacer is positioned between processes that extend outward from a pair of vertebral members. A force applicator is operatively connected to apply a force to the vertebral members. The spacer then acts as a fulcrum with the force causing the vertebral members to pivot about the spacer and become aligned in a more desired orientation to eliminate or reduce the deformity.

Methods for correcting spinal deformities

The present application discloses methods for treating a spinal deformity. In one embodiment, an elongated member is attached to vertebral members with fasteners. A separate fastener may attach the elongated member to each of the vertebral members. The elongated member may apply a force to limit growth on one side of the vertebral members, such as a convex side of a scoliotic spine. Each fastener may be constructed to limit a direction of growth of the vertebral member thereby applying a specific, corrective force to the vertebral member. The fasteners may allow relative motion between adjacent vertebral members without losing the attachment between the vertebral members and the fasteners. The net result may be controlled modulation of growth to reduce and/or eliminate the spinal deformity through redirection of growth potential.

The rod may include an elongated body with first and second ends and have an elongated cross-sectional shape with a major axis and a minor axis and a centroid positioned at an intersection of the axes. A prosthetic device for insertion in a spinal column includes a first, second, and third members. The first member includes an inferiorly extending tab and is of a relatively flexible material. The second member includes a superiorly extending tab and is of a relatively flexible material. The third member defines a superior opening for receiving the inferiorly extending tab and an inferior opening for receiving the superiorly extending tab and is of a relatively stiff material. The device also includes a means for providing a rigid connection of the third member to a vertebra.
