Novel ether-ketone-imide hyperbranched polymers with non-reactive benzophenone or thermally reactive phenylethynyl endgroups were prepared from the corresponding ABmonomer and benzophenone-based endcapping agent in one-pot fashion. The resulting polymer has repeating units of the formula:

A benzobisazole polymer having repeating units of the formula:wherein Q isand wherein Z is &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;S&#x2014; or &#x2014;NH&#x2014;. A new method for preparing 1,5-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid from 1,5-diaminonaphthalene under relatively mild conditions in good yields is also described.

Rigid-rod benzobisazole polymers incorporating naphthalene-1,5-diyl structure units

The present invention relates to compositions comprising rigid-rod polymers and carbon nanotubes. The compositions comprise dispersed carbon nanotubes aligned with rigid-rod polymers. The alignment of the nanotubes and polymers can be liquid crystalline. The rigid-rod polymers of this invention include, but are not limited to, polymers and copolymers comprising benzobisazole, pyridobisimidazole and benzamidazobenzo-phenanthroline repeat units. Dispersion of carbon nanotubes is achieved by in-situ polymerization in the presence of the carbon nanotubes, which may be either single-wall or multi-wall or a combination of both. The polymer compositions comprising carbon nanotubes may be spun into fibers or formed into films. The strength of the resulting fibers of the present invention is significantly greater than that of fibers without carbon nanotubes.

A polymer system having repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein A is --H or --OH, x has a value of 0.5 to 1.0 and y has a value of 1.0-x, exhibits a high glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) and a low dielectric constant. The polymer system is useful in the area of microelectronic packaging.

High temperature polymers with low dielectric properties

Molecular dispersions of rigid-rod polybenzobisazole polymer/copolymer in thermoplastic matrices in a weight ratio of about 1:99 to 50:50 are prepared by dissolving the rigid-rod polymer in an alcoholic or aprotic solvent, dissolving the thermoplastic polymer in an alcoholic or aprotic solvent, combining the two solutions and recovering the resulting molecular composite from the combined solution. These molecular dispersions consist essentially of rigid-rod polybenzobisazole polymer/copolymer having sulfonic acid groups pendant to the polymer/copolymer backbone and thermoplastic polymers selected from the group consisting of polyvinylpyridines, poly(arylene ether ketone)s with a pyridyl functionality, aromatic poly(pyridine ether)s and poly(pyridine ether sulfone) copolymers, and polyimides with a pyridyl functionality.

Processing of thermoplastic rigid-rod molecular composites

Molecular dispersions of rigid-rod polybenzobisazole polymer/copolymer in thermosetting matrices in a weight ratio of about 1:99 to 50:50 are prepared by dissolving the rigid-rod polymer in an alcoholic or aprotic solvent, dissolving the thermosetting polymer in an alcoholic or aprotic solvent, combining the two solutions and recovering the resulting molecular composite from the combined solution. These molecular dispersions consist essentially of rigid-rod polybenzobisazole polymer/copolymer having sulfonic acid groups pendant to the polymer/copolymer backbone and thermosetting polymers selected from the group consisting of iminobis(N-propyl-2-phenylethynyl-phthalimide), N-ethyl-(2,6-di-benzocyclobutenoxy)benzylamine, iminobis(N-propylnadic imide) and difunctional benzoxazine monomers of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is a single bond, --CO-- or --C(CH.sub.3).sub.2 -- and Q is --CH.sub.3 or --C.sub.6 H.sub.5.

Processing of thermoset rigid-rod molecular composites

An aryletherketone copolymer having repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein the ratio m:n is in the range of 1:99 to 99:1; wherein Ar is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR2## and wherein Ar' is selected from the group consisting of ##STR3## wherein Q is --O--, --CH.sub.2 -- or --CO--, is useful in the dispersion of active NLO chromophores containing a basic functionality to form optically clear films.

Alcohol-soluble aromatic heterocyclic polymers and copolymers having repeating units of the formulae I or II: ##STR1## wherein Q is a benzobisazole of the formula: ##STR2## wherein X is --O-- or --S--; wherein x has a value of 0.0 to 1.00 and y has a value of 0.05 to 1.00, and R is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR3## and R' is selected from the group consisting of alkyl having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, alkaryl having 7 to 12 carbon atoms, aralkyl having 7 to 12 carbon atoms and substituted aromatic having 1 to 3 substituent groups. The alcohol-soluble polymers and copolymers may be used for fabricating organic/inorganic hybrid composites with metal alkoxides M(OZ).sub.v, wherein M is Si, Ti, Al or the like and Z is a lower alkyl group. These polymers and copolymers can also be used to coat materials or substrates which are susceptible to attack by highly corrosive acids. On drying, the ionic bond between the trialkylamine and the sulfo group is broken and the (co)polymer reverts to the parent structure, thereby leaving a (co)polymer coating. Yet further, the original amine can be exchanged with a less volatile amine or an amine having a desired functionality. After removal of the solvent, the resulting material is mono-dispersed and stable.

Alcohol soluble rigid-rod benzobisazole polymers

Alcohol-soluble aromatic heterocyclic copolymers having repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein x has a value of 0.05 to 0.50 and y has a value of 1.0-x. These copolymers are useful in the preparation of organic/inorganic hybrid materials having transparency which comprise the sol-gel derived, hydrolytically condensed reaction product of a metal alkoxide of the formula M(OR).sub.w wherein R is a lower alkyl group, M is Si, Ti, Al or a mixture thereof, and w is the valence value of M, and the above copolymer.

Phosphonic acid-pendent benzoxazole copolymers

Alcohol-soluble aromatic heterocyclic polymers having repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein X is --O-- or --S--, and R is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR2## and R' is selected from the group consisting of alkyl having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, alkaryl having 7 to 12 carbon atoms, aralkyl having 7 to 12 carbon atoms and substituted aromatic having 1 to 3 substituent groups. The alcohol-soluble polymers may be used for fabricating organic/inorganic hybrid composites with metal alkoxides M(OQ).sub.v, wherein M is Si, Ti, Al or the like and Q is a lower alkyl group. Alcohol-soluble, aromatic heterocyclic copolymers having repeating units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein x has a value of 0.10 to 0.90 and y has a value of 1.0-x. These copolymers are useful in the preparation of organic/inorganic hybrid materials having transparency which comprise the sol-gel derived, hydrolytically condensed reaction product of a metal alkoxide of the formula M(OR).sub.w wherein R is a lower alkyl group, M is Si, Ti, Al or a mixture thereof, and w is the valence value of M, and the above copolymer.
