A method, and aqueous emulsion, for coating a metal part with a peelable mask that is resistant to attack by the strong acid and strong base etchants used in chemical milling are disclosed. The method comprises contacting a polyvalent metal cation salt-surfaced part with an anionic emulsion for a time period effective to coat the part. The anionic emulsion includes coalescent rubbery particles and pigment and has a total solids content of at least about 10 weight percent. The weight ratio of pigment to rubbery particles is about 0.1:1 to about 2:1, respectively.

Masking compositions and method for applying the same

A method of coating a metal part with a peelable mask which is resistant to attack by the strong acid and strong base etchants used in chemical milling is disclosed in which the metal part is surfaced with a layer of polyvalent metal salt, such as calcium nitrate, and then immersed in a high solids content anionic emulsion of coalescent rubbery particles heavily pigmented to contain at least about 45% total solids content and at least 20% pigment, the pigment to binder ratio being from 0.75:1 to 1:0.51. The salt-surfaced metal part is held in the anionic emulsion until the desired coating thickness has been anodically deposited thereon, and then the coated part is removed and baked to complete the formation of the mask. The rubbery particles are preferably constituted by an anionic polychloroprene homopolymer emulsion which is used in admixture with a curing agent for the homopolymer, like zinc oxide, and a polyvinylidene chloride latex. Sodium bichromate is included with the polyvalent metal salt to enhance corrosion resistance, and a silicone release agent is included to control adhesion to the metal substrate.

A process for drying a water-wet paste containing polymeric beads without agglomeration is disclosed in which there is added to the wet paste a proportion of an organic solvent which forms an azeotrope with water, such as methyl isobutyl ketone, in an amount providing a stirrable mixture, and the solvent-containing aqueous paste is heated to remove the water as an azeotrope with the solvent and to produce a water free suspension of the beads in organic solvent. The proportion of azeotropic solvent can be minimized by adding a resinous vehicle in organic solvent solution to the solvent-containing aqueous paste after substantially all the water has been removed, and continuing the application of heat to remove undesired organic solvent and thereby increase the solids content. As a feature of the invention, a pigment which is incompatible with the azeotropic solvent, such as an aqueous dispersion of lamp black, is added to the aqueous paste either before or after the addition of azeotropic organic solvent to be present while the water is azeotropically removed to avoid flooding.

A process is disclosed in which polyalkoxy amino silane adhesion promoters are incorporated into isocyanate-functional polyurethane resins formed by the reaction of a stoichiometric excess of organic polyisocyanate with an hydroxy-functional resin without producing cloudy and/or unstable resin solutions. In this process, the hydroxy-functional resin is prereacted with the alkoxy functionality of the amino silane in a reaction which liberates alcohol, and then a stoichiometric excess of the organic polyisocyanate is added to cause the isocyanate groups of the polyisocyanate to react with both the hydroxy groups and the amino hydrogen atoms present.
