The syringe includes a barrel, a plunger, and an adapter for mounting the needle in the distal end of the barrel. The adapter includes a protrusion projecting away from the needle end and into the barrel defining an annular space between the barrel and the protrusion. The plunger and protrusion have complementary surfaces whereby the plunger may grip the adapter for removal of the adapter into the interior of the barrel after use. These complementary surfaces afford initial resistance to further axial movement of the plunger toward the adapter, signalling the user that further axial pressure will permanently lock the plunger and adapter to one another whereby, upon application of full axial pressure on the plunger, the complementary surfaces of the plunger and adapter permanently lock to one another to enable joint unitary movement of the plunger and adapter together with the needle carried by the adapter into the barrel. The adapter includes vent passages communicating between the central passage through the adapter and the annular space whereby air can be vented from the barrel after receiving fluid within the barrel and prior to injection. Thus, the syringe may be oriented in a vertical position needle end uppermost with the vent passages forming the most superior portion of the barrel interior whereby air may be vented.

The syringe includes an adapter threaded into the distal end of the barrel and a plunger axially movable within the barrel. A stop and catch cooperate between the adapter and barrel end to prevent rotation of the adapter. Adapter and plunger engagement structures are carried by the plunger and adapter, respectively, to enable joint rotation of the plunger and adapter relative to the barrel to unthread the adapter from the barrel end and withdraw the adapter and needle carried thereby jointly with the plunger into the interior of the barrel. The engagement structures also include an element for engaging the catch in response to axial movement of the plunger to release the adapter for rotational movement relative to the barrel end and subsequent withdrawal of the adapter and needle carried thereby into the barrel.

A blunt needle plastic cannula for a syringe has a central axial passage terminating in a tip opening axially through one end thereof. Different axial sections along the cannula have respective differential resistances to movement relative to a membrane upon insertion of the cannula into the membrane. The opposite end of the cannula may have a Luer fit or Luer lock or may have integrally formed therewith an adapter for releasably connecting the adapter and cannula to the distal end of the barrel of the syringe. A syringe plunger and the adapter have connective structure whereby the adapter and cannula can be withdrawn into the interior of the barrel. The opposite ends of the barrel are sealed by portions of the plunger.

A plastic cannula has a hub mounting a pair of flanges forming a Luer lock connection with a standard syringe having female threads about its distal end. A cannula guard receives the cannula and has radially inward projections for engaging portions of the cannula to rotate the cannula guard and cannula relative to the syringe to fix the cannula onto the syringe. The cannula guard is removed by rotating the guard in an opposite direction, causing projections along the inner surface of the cannula guard to ratchet past ribs on the cannula, enabling removal of the cannula guard from the cannula without applying sufficient torque to the cannula to remove the cannula from the syringe.

A syringe includes a barrel having a cannula at one end and a plunger at its opposite end whereby fluid may be drawn into or expressed from the barrel by translatory movement of the plunger relative to the barrel. A white ink receptor coating is provided on the barrel at manufacture and on which coating writing may be applied by the medical practitioner using a common ordinary writing implement such as a ballpoint pen. By locating the ink receptor coating diametrically opposite the index markings on the syringe barrel and providing the coating in a white color, the index markings may be readily read against the contrasting white background to ascertain the quantity of fluid within the syringe barrel.

A medical supply and sharps container includes a container body having a cover. Medical apparatus may be supplied the user in the container. The cover includes a lid or door defining an entry slot into the container after the medical apparatus has been removed and the container has been converted to a sharps container. In one form, a lid defines an entry slot through the cover for disposition of medical waste material onto an inclined chute underlying the lid whereby an individual's hand or fingers cannot be passed through the entry slot into the container. In another form, a hood and balanced shelf arrangement is releasably secured to the cover in a manner to open a door overlying an opening through the cover upon securement of the arrangement to the cover and to close the door upon removal of the arrangement from the cover.

The syringe includes a barrel, a plunger and an adapter for mounting the needle in the distal end of the barrel. The proximal end of the plunger includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced teeth having radially projecting fingers with contact surfaces. The adapter includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced teeth having undercut surfaces. By advancing the plunger to engage the adapter and rotating the plunger relative to the adapter and syringe barrel, the plunger and adapter are locked to one another. By further rotating the plunger and adapter, the adapter is unscrewed from the barrel end and withdrawn with the syringe needle into the interior of the barrel. The plunger may be broken off adjacent the adapter and inserted, broken end first, into the distal end of the barrel to seal the barrel.

A syringe has a barrel, a plunger and an adapter for threaded engagement with the distal end of the barrel. The adapter has a central axial passageway for passing fluid between proximal and distal ends. The plunger and adapter have cooperating engagement structure including connective and drive surfaces for connecting the plunger to the adapter and unthreading the adapter from the barrel end for withdrawal of the adapter into the interior of the barrel.
