A video game development system for enhancing communications between development tools and video game platforms or running games. The system includes a communications hub module running on a computer or server and communicatively linked with first and second video game platforms to allow the communications hub module to forward messages to and receive messages from the game platforms. Memory accessible by the communications hub module stores communication data sets or libraries controlling communications with the game platforms. A video game development tool is provided in the system and is communicatively linked with the communications hub module. The development tool transmits messages formatted based on a client-side communications library defining communications with the hub module. The hub module receives the transmitted messages, generates game platform messages from the received messages based on the platform communication libraries, and forwards the game platform messages to the first and second video game platforms.

Communication hub for video game development systems

A system and method for performing performance testing of video game software from a host computer or external to the game platforms. The system includes a plurality of game platforms, of one, two, or more configurations, running a video game and a communications hub communicatively linked with the game platforms. The testing system includes a metrics gathering framework linked with the communications hub. During operation, the metrics gathering framework requests a metric value from the game platforms via the communication hub, receives the metric values from the game platforms, and stores the metric values in memory of the computer system. In this manner, the majority of the performance test is performed externally or 'off-console' so as to avoid polluting the testing environment such as by hindering game performance. The testing may include determining a metric value is out-of-tolerance, and, in response, requesting additional performance data to facilitate troubleshooting.

The development tool is used to perform modifications to video game data including game asset changes and additions. An authoring module is associated with the video game development tool and operates after the game data modifications to transmit an authoring message to the hub module. The authoring message includes content reflecting the game data modifications and is formatted for receipt by the hub module. The hub module generates update messages from the authoring messages and forwards these messages to the video game platforms that operate to run a video game using the game data modifications.
