A localization device display method and apparatus for recording positional parameters associated with a tool being navigated with the localization device. The localization device monitors the position of a tool and automatically records positional parameters associated with the tool when the positional parameters conform to an area of interest and the tool is stable.

Recording localization device tool positional parameters

A system and method for creating a cavity to receive an acetabulum in a pelvic bone with the aid of a navigated tool are provided. A tear-drop point on a pelvic bone is located by means of a scanning instrument. A tear-drop plane is determined from position data of the tear-drop point and the plane of the pelvic inlet. The tear-drop plane lies perpendicular to the plane of the pelvic inlet, extends parallel to a line connecting the two anterior superior iliac spines, and runs through the tear-drop point. A reference point is determined which is at a defined height above the tear-drop plane, in a defined position in an anterior-posterior direction, and at a defined spacing from an outer surface of the pelvic bone in a lateral-medial direction. A tool is worked into the pelvic bone in a desired direction relative to the reference point.

Method and surgical navigation system for creating a recess to receive an acetabulum

A method and apparatus for cross checking points palpated with a localization device. Points corresponding to the palpated points are obtained from a preoperative image of an object such as an X-Ray of a tibia bone. During a surgical procedure, the accuracy of palpated points are determined based on the palpated points and corresponding points obtained from the preoperative image. If a palpated point is inaccurate, an indicator is generated to indicate the inaccuracy of the palpated point.

Methods and apparatus for determining the orientation and the position of an object in space with the assistance of a sensing instrument are provided. The sensing instrument is provided with a marking element. The orientation and position of the marking element is determinable by means of the navigation system. In order to be able to carry out a reliable determination of the position, even under confined conditions of access, the sensing instrument is adapted to be successively connected in a guided manner to the object for free rotation about two non-parallel, defined axes of rotation. The sensing instrument can be rotated about these axes of rotation, and the orientation and the position of the two defined axes of rotation in space and hence the orientation and the position of the object in space can be calculated from the resulting movement of the marking element during this rotation.

In order to establish an optimum position on the upper side of the tibia for the exit point of an anterior cruciate ligament replacement, it is proposed that, with the leg bent, the position of a number of points along the front edge of the notch is detected and in this way their position and progression on the femur are also determined, that, with the leg straight, the course of this front edge of the notch is projected onto a projection plane which is perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tibia in the region of the upper side of the tibia, and that, within the region enclosed by this projected curve, the exit point is selected such that it maintains at least a distance corresponding to the radius of the implant from the projected curve. Furthermore, an apparatus for carrying out such a method is proposed.

Method and apparatus for determining the position of the tibial exit point of the anterior cruciate ligament

A method and apparatus for capturing information associated with a surgical procedure performed using a localization device. The localization device includes sensors that define a field of view in which a marker associated with a surgical tool is tracked. The localization device also includes a camera having a field of view that includes at least a portion of the field of view defined by the sensors. In response to the identification of a designated event (e.g., a signal generated in response to the actuation of a switch by a surgeon), the localization device captures coordinates associated with the surgical tool and captures an image acquired with the camera. In addition, a display screen and/or an endoscopic image associated with the surgical procedure may be captured in response to the designated event. The captured information provides a record of the surgical procedure for use in post operative analysis.

Method and apparatus for capturing information associated with a surgical procedure performed using a localization device

In order to avoid the use of a marking element on the pelvic bone in a method for determining the mechanical axis of a femur, with which the femur is moved about the hip joint, the movement of the femur is followed via a navigation system by means of a marking element on the femur, position data of the femur obtained therefrom are stored and the position of the mechanical axis of the femur is calculated relative to the same from the various position data of the femur in various positions, it is suggested that the femur be pivoted from an initial position only through a maximum pivoting angle of 15&#xb0; in various directions and that the mechanical axis of the femur be calculated from the position data of the surface area thereby covered by the marking element and from the position data of the knee joint otherwise determined. In addition, a device for carrying out this method is described.

Method and device for determining the mechanical axis of a femur

A localization device display method and apparatus for displaying different views, e.g., of different magnification, based on the proximity of the tip of a pointer tracked by the localization device to a reference location identified by the localization device. The display method and apparatus may be incorporated into a surgical navigation system for use in identifying a location for drilling a femoral tunnel in an ACL repair procedure.
