A printing machine spray device for moistening surfaces of cylinders, rolls, rollers which are rotating around a transverse axis of the machine and/or for moistening the material being printed which is moving in the longitudinal direction of the machine. The liquid is sprayed by two sprayers onto the surface to be moistened while the two sprayers are being moved in respective opposite directions transversely over the surface. Each sprayer starts from a different respective longitudinal side of the machine. Controls determine the on-off delivery of spray, the speed of sprayer motion, the starting positions of each of the sprayers and may adjust these for machine parameters. Automatic dosing of a specific quantity during one spraying is provided. The input to a sprayer may be from one of selected sources.

An apparatus to apply cleaning fluid to a cylinder of a rotary printing machine with a controlled supply to the exit openings of a distributor device, from which the cleaning fluid can be sprayed on the cylinder with a specific time and space distribution. Guide elements to dam the jet are provided in front of and behind the region of the spray jet so as to limit this region toward the outside. The guide elements are attached to the distributor device and bridge over the distance between the distributor device and the convex surface of the cylinder, while forming narrow gaps between the guide elements and the convex cylinder surface. There is a flow labyrinth at least in the downstream gap.

An apparatus for cleaning cylinders of a rotating drum printing machine has a cleaning cloth, which can be unwound, and a contacting body. The cleaning, which otherwise is carried in fixed time regions, for which precisely dimensioned cloth sections can be made available, is changed to a measure, which is carried out with an alternating contacting pressure of the contacting body and a quasi continuous advance of the cloth. In the contacting zone, the cloth is taken hold of directly and pulled. An oscillating mechanism, which is preferably realized pneumatically, is provided for the alternating contacting pressure.

This invention relates to a process and apparatus for cleaning the rubber blankets of a rotary offset printing press while the web is running. The cleaning agent used to remove ink and paper residue from the rubber blanket is partially transferred to the web and passed to the dryer. At an advanced stage of the printing run, where we can observe a rise and subsequent drop in the ink residue curve paralleled by a corresponding curve for the cleaning solution load, undesirably high fume release levels may occur. These fume levels may, on one hand, be controlled via the cleaning program. On the other hand, it is possible to adjust these fume levels by influencing the fume release through the application of a suitable agent to the web surface. The application of this material will inhibit the fume release and alter the component moieties in the fumes while additionally permitting the released components to be sealed off. The material utilized is predominantly water. The dryer inlet section is equipped with a spraying system which is fed the correct dose (in terms of quantity and time) of said medium to ensure the lowest possible concentration of explosive or noxious fumes.

A continuous drier for drying a printed web on web-fed rotary printing presses operates during ongoing printing and blanket washing processes with control of the gaseous and vaporous constituents of the ink, solvent, and burner gases. An infrared beam path is installed in the drier to measure concentrations of gas vapors in the drier by an extinction method. The continuous drier process is thus controlled according to the rate of evaporation of volatile constituents. The infrared extinction measurement yields spectral measurements of vapors released by the printing ink during the printing process, or of solvent constituents released during the blanket cleaning process, each according to their characteristic band position and intensity. During the transition from printing to blanket washing, the user obtains an instant picture, based on the band intensities, of the current vapor concentrations. Depending on the concentration limits, he can then adjust the flow, heating and ventilation settings within the drier system or selectively adjust solvent dosages. In conjunction with rapid control interventions or preprogrammed adjustments, this undelayed on-line measuring system prevents explosions in the drier. The system also allows the composition of the printing ink, with its varying application rates, to be controlled based on the measured extinction values. Similarly, the burner settings can be controlled via the CO and fuel gas bands in the drier.

In the case of a printing press having an impression cylinder for cooperation with at least one transfer cylinder, such as a blanket cylinder, for applying a printing image to a web, a higher degree of quality and greater ease of operation are made possible by having a wiping device with a wiping cloth for engaging the impression cylinder and possibly a bend roll. The wiping device is arranged to act on a part of the periphery of the impression cylinder not having the web of paper trained about it.
