An exhaust gas recirculation cooler (EGR cooler) provided in an exhaust gas recirculation line departing from an exhaust system and opening into an intake system of an internal combustion engine is configured as a heat pipe heat exchanger including at least one enclosed and evacuated heat pipe filled with a working medium, the first end of the heat pipe being subject to exhaust gas from the exhaust gas recirculation line and the second end being in contact with a heat sink. In order to provide a compact design which will permit simple and effective cooling of the recycled exhaust gas, the longitudinal axis of the EGR cooler is aligned in parallel with the axis of the at least one heat pipe, so that an essentially axial flow of exhaust gas is obtained in the EGR cooler.

Exhaust gas recirculation cooler

The invention relates to a variable swirl generating intake manifold with at least one longitudinally oriented partition wall that forms at least one swirl generating first manifold section and one swirl stopping second manifold section, said manifold sections only meeting again in the valve area, at least the second manifold section being, for the purpose of increasing the swirl, at least partially closable in the entrance area by means of a control flap that is pivotal about an axis, said axis being substantially arranged in the plane of the partition wall, said control flap having two arms and said two manifold sections being at least partially closable in a first rotational end position and open in a second rotational end position. To permit in the simplest possible way to both vary the swirl and throttle the intake charge there is provided that, for providing an increase in swirl, the control flap may be deviated from the second rotational end position toward a third end position by closing at least partially the second manifold section.

In order to utilize recycling of exhaust gases at high engine loads in an internal-combustion engine with an exhaust gas turbocharger, optionally with a charge cooler, as well as an exhaust gas recycling valve which is arranged within a connecting pipe through which a partial exhaust gas stream flows, the connecting pipe, in the direction of the flow, branching from the exhaust pipe upstream of the exhaust gas turbine and connecting into the charge pipe downstream of the exhaust gas turbine, an apparatus is employed which injects water into the partial exhaust gas stream flowing the connecting pipe at operating temperature and at high load operation of the internal-combustion engine.

Internal-combustion engine with exhaust gas turbocharger

In a valve-controlled internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection and a swirling air charge, a combustion chamber is located in the piston and is configured as a toroidal part ending in a throat-like cylindrical part towards the piston top. A narrow, ring-shaped overflow passage leads from the toroidal part to the cylindrical part of the combustion chamber. The proposal is put forward that the thermal and fluid-mechanical parameters be improved by placing the axis of the combustion chamber between the tip of the injection nozzle and the cylinder axis, and by varying the width of the ring-shaped overflow passage. The narrowest part of said overflow passage lying in the area closest to the tip of the nozzle, and further, the top of the center part is unsymmetrical, with a minimum distance to the injection jets at upper dead center of the piston.

Internal combustion engine

In a valve-controlled compression-ignition engine with direct fuel injection and an intake passage inducing the inflowing air to rotate around the cylinder axis, an ideal combustion system has been found, combining the advantages of a diesel engine with direct fuel injection and an open combustion recess and those of a diesel engine with a pre-combustion or swirl chamber, while eliminating the main disadvantages of these two basic types. According to the proposals put forward by this invention the restricted passage or throat in the center area of the combustion chamber is bounded by means of a rotationally symmetric center part, whose lower end forms part of the toroidal combustion chamber, and whose top remains slightly below the fuel jet at the upper dead center of the piston, and which constitutes the inner boundary of the narrow ring-shaped scavenge passage leading from the combustion recess to the cylindrical throat, or rather to the cylinder itself.
