A process for the preparation of synthetic resins based on resorcinol compounds which comprises reacting a resorcinol pitch which is obtained in the manufacture of resorcinol from benzenedisulfonic acid in at least one step with an oxo-compound selected from aldehydes, ketones and compounds based on or splitting off at least one of these substances, and the use of the products as binders for abrasive articles.

p-Tert.butylbenzotribromide and the derivatives thereof which is halogen-substituted at the nucleus are prepared under side chain halogenation conditions by bromination of p-tert.butyltoluene and its derivatives substituted at the nucleus by halogen. Practically no undesired bromination in the nucleus or at the tert.butyl radical takes place. By partial saponification of the benzotribromide the corresponding benzoyl bromide is obtained. Further saponification of the latter or complete saponification of the benzotribromide yields p-tert.butylbenzoic acid and derivatives thereof which are halogen substituted at the nucleus, the esters of which can be used in pharmacology.

P-Tert.butylbenzotribromide and p-tert.butylbenzoyl bromide and process

p-tert.Butylbenzaldehyde and the derivatives thereof which are halogen-substituted at the nucleus are prepared by bromination of p-tert.butyltoluene and the derivatives thereof which are correspondingly halogen-substituted at the nucleus under side-chain halogenation conditions until the benzal bromide is obtained which is then saponified. Practically no undesired bromination at the nucleus or the tert.butyl group takes place. The products obtained are valuable intermediates for the manufacture of pharmaceutical agents, plant protecting agents and dyestuffs.

Process for the manufacture of para-tert.butylbenzaldehyde and its

m-Halobenzoyl halides are prepared by chlorinating or brominating benzoyl chloride or benzoyl bromide in the absence of a solvent and in the presence of FeCl.sub.3 or FeBr.sub.3 as the catalyst and of sulfur and/or at least one inorganic and/or organic sulfur compound as the cocatalyst, at a temperature of from about 0.degree. to 90.degree. C. The compounds are valuable starting products and intermediates for the manufacture of dyestuffs, pharmaceuticals and plant protectives.

Process for the manufacture of m-halobenzoyl halides

A process for the preparation of N-(chloroaryl)-N',N'-dialkylamidines in which N-aryl-N',N'-dialkylamidines in the form of their salts are directly chlorinated in halogenated hydrocarbons at 15.degree.-80.degree. C. From the hydrochloride salts thus obtained the free amidines are set free with alkaline agents. The N-(chloroaryl)-N',N'-dialkylamidines are valuable intermediates for the preparation of dyestuffs and insecticides.

Continuous preparation of mono- or di-(trichloromethyl)-benzenes or of mono- or di-(trichloromethyl)-benzenes substituted in the benzene ring by halogen atoms from the corresponding mono- or dimethylbenzenes and chlorine in several steps with radiation by means of rays of high energy, is effected by reacting mono- or dimethylbenzene with chlorine in 4 to 14 steps, at a temperature in the range of from 20.degree. to 130.degree. C, whereby chlorine is introduced into the second step and the following steps, the resulting waste gas is introduced into step 1 and chlorine contained in the waste gas is reacted in reactor 1 with fresh mono- and dimethylbenzene. A preferred embodiment for carrying out the process is reaction in a reactor arrangement in cascade form, wherein the number of steps corresponds to the number of reactors and wherein as reactors circulation reactors are used.

The hydrochloride of 5-chloro-2-toluidine is obtained by dispersing 2-toluidine hydrochloride in a halohydrocarbon and reacting it with chlorine. No isomers are formed and very little higher chlorinated products. 5-chloro-2-toluidine is easily set free from the hydrochloride with aqueous bases.
