A method establishes a video telephone connection in a data network that includes a telephone network and an IP network based on the internet protocol. The expression video telephony connection is to be taken generally in this context and encompasses multimedia telephony in addition to pure video telephony.

Method for establishing a video telephone connection and/or a multimedia telephone connection in a data network

A video telecommunication connection is established via a landline telecommunications network and an IP multimedia subsystem telecommunications network using a media gateway control function of at least one Internet multimedia-media gateway device in the IP multimedia subsystem telecommunications network. An H.223 multiplex level usable for a telecommunication connection is exposed to an H.223 protocol negotiation, in carrying out an H.245 protocol negotiations for setting up the H.223 protocol negotiations connection for a telecommunication connection. A media gateway control function device is informed when the H.223 logic channels are open by H.245 signaling, thereby enabling the Internet multimedia-media gateway device of the IP multimedia subsystem telecommunications network to carry out at least part of the setup.

The embodiments relate to, among other things, a network interface unit (IM-MGW) in which signaling data is separated from useful data by the values of received data. The signaling data is tunneled to a control unit (MGCF). Two different data transmission networks (CS, IMS) can thus be simply combined, in particular, for video telephony.

Method for the transmission of signalling data in a network interface unit and in a control unit and corresponding devices

A method is disclosed for use in a packet switched network, comprising carrying descriptor information relating to options for stream adaptation, for example media stream adaptation, in the packet switched network using at least one of the Next Step in Signalling, NSIS, and Resource Reservation Protocol, RSVP, signalling protocols. Carrying the descriptor information may comprise receiving (S), processing (S), generating (S), distributing (S), transmitting (S) or using the descriptor information in any way. The method aims to provide a generally applicable solution for cross-layer information forwarding, with one realization of the general solution using the Layer Independent Descriptor as the forwarded information. Specific NSIS and RSVP object formats are also proposed.

Method and apparatus for stream adaption in a packet switched network

To achieve sophisticated adaptation mechanisms in a packet switched communication environment for service delivery, there is generated descriptor information on an application level. The descriptor information describes media stream control options and is provided to the packet switched communication environment prior to media streaming. Also, there is provided a method of controlling media streaming in a network apparatus operated in the communication environment using the descriptor information.
