A device which houses the active and passive nodal point modules of telecommunication installations in the ground comprises a metal container with a removable cover and a removable support for the modules housed in the container. The modules are attached in a heat-conductive manner to the internal surface of the support. The support is made of heat-conductive material and its external surface has a number of cooling fins. Through the cooling fins, the support makes heat-conductive contact with the internal surface of the container.

A device is described for connecting two electric aerial cables. Each aerial cable has tube, containing optical fibers, which is cabled with electric conductors and strength member. Means are provided for the mechanical and electrically conductive joining of the electric conductors and strength members of the two cables. A sealed splice carrier for receiving the spliced connections of the optical fibers comprises two concentric tubes (7, 9) with a annular gap between them. The annular gap is sealed at both ends. The optical fibers are inserted into the annular gap through apertures in the end seals (8). The spliced connections and a length of optical fibers are stored in the annular gap. In an underground configuration housing for telecommunication devices, a mechanically stable housing, which is closed by a removable cover, has an installation located inside which supports at least one telecommunication device. The installation supporting the telecommunication devices is a pot-shaped container with a cylindrical insert positioned therein so as to form a gap therebetween. The container is sealed in water-proof fashion by a removable cover and the telecommunication devices are located inside of the cylindrical insert.

A process for encasing articles, particularly encasing cable splices, cable termination, a radially expanded tube made of a rubbery elastic material is positioned on the article. The tube is maintained in the expanded condition by a tension medium in the form of a plastic tube attached to the outer surface of the tube. The attachment between the surface of the tube and the tension medium is removed for the purpose of resetting the tube. The resetting is accomplished by cooling the plastic tube to a sub-ambient temperature thereby destroying the plastic tube.

A flat, heat recoverable shrink object is comprised of a plurality of core strands placed in a parallel position and each having a polymeric, thermoplastic or crosslinked core around which is coiled a high tensile strength thread such as glass, metal, cotton polyamide etc. These core strands are combined with high strength threads extending transverse to the core strands and being e.g. interwoven or looped or just superposed; All these parts are embedded in a crosslinked, heated stretched and cooled-again polymer layer whereby the coiled helices are stretched accordingly. This flat object is applied to other objects for being heat shrunk thereon. The two high strength threads tear proof the object particularly during its being made.

A method including using a device for sealing the end of a heat-shrunk sleeve enclosing a branch connection of electrical or optical cables which grips the outside surface of the sleeve between the branched cables and keeps the opposing surface areas of the sleeve between the cables in contact with each other during cooling of the heat-shrunk sleeve. The device has two identical preformed parts. Each part has a foot part and an arm extending in a semicircle from the foot part. The foot part has at least one peg and one bore, through which the preformed parts can be joined to form the device. The arms encircle one of the branched cables and the free ends of the arms grip the sleeve between the branched cables.

Method for sealing the end of a heat-shrunk sleeve

A device for sealing the end of a heat-shrunk sleeve surrounding a branching connection of electrical or optical cables grips the outer surface of the sleeve between the branching cables and keeps the opposing surfaces of the sleeve in contact with each other between the cables, during cooling after the heat-shrinking of the sleeve. The device has two parallel arms which are interlocked with each other at one end. The distance between the arms can be changed in such a way, that the arms remain essentially parallel at any distance from each other. The device is preferably installed after heat-shrinking.

A heat recoverable, shrink-object is made from a mesh or web assembly having thermoplastic threads that extend in a first direction, and second threads that are essentially non-stretchable and run transversely to the first threads, that assembly is embedded in a polymer matrix which is then crosslinked; the thermoplastic threads do not crosslink; the matrix with embedded mesh or web is then heated to a temperature above the crystallite melting point of the polymer matrix and the thermoplastic threads are stretched into an elongated state at that temperature, and the stretching is maintained during subsequent cooling until a lower temperature including room temperature is reached and stretching is no longer needed to maintain said elongated state.

Method of making a fiber reinforced heat recoverable object

Central is a nonstretchable, high strength thread that extends transverse to stretching, either of individual heat recoverable strands or of an embedding layer. The thread is either placed across plural heat recoverable strands, or plural threads are individually wrapped around the strands, or there is a plurality of helices on thermoplastic strings in a heat recoverable embedment, with further transverse high strength threads being interwoven with the helices.
