Anionically (co)polymerizable vinyl or diene compounds are polymerized in solution and in a reaction zone in the form of a flow tube, using an organometallic initiator, by a continuous process in which the reaction takes place essentially without heat exchange with the environment, the residence time is less than 5 minutes and the reaction zone contains no moving parts.

In a process for preparing block copolymers of styrene or its equivalents on the one hand and of butadiene or its equivalents on the other hand by sequential anionic polymerization, in which a first monomer and the organometallic compound serving as initiator are first of all combined to form a reaction mixture and the reaction is continued until at least part of the first monomer has been consumed, and then at least one further monomer is added and is in each case partially or completely reacted, the polymerization is carried out continuously in a conventional manner in a tubular reactor, the reaction of in each case one monomer being carried out in each case in one reactor section and at least two reactor sections being separated by a mixing stretch.

Preparation of block copolymers by ionic polymerization

A process is described for preparing styrene polymers by continuous anionic polymerization, the monomer or monomers and the organometallic compound serving as starter (initiator) being added in solution to a tubular reactor operating essentially without backmixing and being left in the reactor until the monomer has been consumed, wherein the polymerization is carried out in at least two successive tubular reactor sections operating in each case essentially adiabatically, with in each case at least one heat exchanger arranged between the sections. If desired a proportion of the starter and/or of the monomer is added to at least one reactor connected downstream of the first reactor.

A thermoplastic molding material based on a styrene polymer which has been made impact-resistant, and on a polyphenylene ether, wherein the impact-resistant styrene polymer comprises a soft component which has a mean particle diameter of greater than 0.3 .mu.m and contains an acrylic ester polymer as the elastomeric component. The novel molding materials possess improved flow and give moldings having improved aging resistance.

Thermoplastic molding material

Thermoplastic molding materials contain a copolymer A and a graft copolymer B. The copolymer A is a hard component comprising one or more copolymers of styrene and/or .alpha.-methylstyrene with from 20 to 40% by weight of acrylonitrile. The graft copolymer B comprises one or more crosslinked acrylate polymer with a mean particle size of 0.5-0.8 .mu.m (d.sub.50 value of the cumulative mass distribution), a particle distribution, expressed by the ratio ##EQU1## in the range Q.gtoreq.0.6, and a glass transition temperature Tg below 0.degree. C. A mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile in a weight ratio from 88:12 to 65:35 is grafted onto this rubber.
