The invention describes a light emitting diode array module () comprising a plurality of light emitting diode structures (), wherein the light emitting diode structures () are arranged such that there is an optical cross talk between the light emitting diode structures () during operation of the light emitting diode array module (), wherein at least a first light emitting diode structure () of the plurality of light emitting diode structures () is characterized by a first color, and wherein at least a second light emitting diode structure () of the plurality of light emitting diode structures () is characterized by a second color different than the first color, wherein the first color, the second color and the optical cross talk between the light emitting diodes are arranged to provide a predefined light distribution in a reference plane () perpendicular to an optical axis () of the light emitting diode an-ay module (). The invention further describes a lighting device comprising one or more LED array modules ().

LED array module

The invention describes a lighting assembly and a lighting device with improved thermal behavior and a method to manufacture such a lighting assembly comprising at least one point-like light source having a first and a second electrical contact, a lead frame having metal areas to electrically connect at least the first electrical contact and to spread heat from the point-like light sources via the metal areas, and a plastic layer arranged at least on top of the lead frame. One or more conductive traces are applied on a first surface of the plastic layer facing away from the lead frame to electrically insulate the conductive traces on the plastic layer from the metal areas of the lead frame. Additional components or the second electrical contact might be connected to the conductive traces.

Lighting assembly with improved thermal behaviour

A light-emitting apparatus can include a reflective cavity that can reflect visible light within the reflective cavity. The reflective cavity can allow the reflected visible light to exit the reflective cavity only at one or more specified emission locations. A visible light-emitting diode can emit visible light into the reflective cavity. An infrared light-emitting diode can emit infrared light into the reflective cavity. A lens can angularly redirect infrared light and visible light that exit the cavity through the one or more emission locations. The reflective cavity can be formed by surfaces at least partially coated with a coating that is reflective for visible light. The coated surfaces can include a circuit board that supports the light-emitting diodes, an incident surface of the lens, and an extension portion of the lens that extends from a flange to the incident surface of the lens.

A thin plastic light guide is formed to have cavities on one surface and TIR (total internal reflection) structures directly above the cavities. LEDs mounted on a printed circuit board are positioned hi the cavities. The cavity walls are shaped to refract the LED light and direct the LED light toward the TIR structures to most efficiently make use of the TIR structures. The TIR structures may have a cusp or cone shape. The top ceiling of the cavities may be shaped to direct light at the TIR structure so as to leak through the TIR structure and blend the light with light leaking through surrounding portions of the light guide. The LEDs may be distributed only near the edges of the light guide or over the entire back surface of the light guide. A diffuser sheet may be laminated over the light guide to further mix the light.

Illumination structure including cavity and TIR structure

In an imaging system, a lens can redirect light from an illuminated portion of a scene toward a one-dimensional focus that is positioned in a focal plane of the lens and is elongated in an imaging dimension. The redirected light can include first light that emerges from the lens and second light that emerges from the lens. A reflector positioned adjacent the lens can reflect the second light to form third light. A linear array of detector pixels can extend along the imaging dimension and can be positioned at the focal plane proximate the one-dimensional focus to receive the first light from the lens and receive the third light from the reflector. A processor can obtain one-dimensional image data from the detector pixels for sequentially illuminated portions of the scene and construct data representing an image of the full scene from the one-dimensional image data.

Molded light guide for optically coupling light from LEDs

A light emitting diode array module includes a plurality of light emitting diode structures. The light emitting diode structures are arranged such that there is an optical cross talk between the light emitting diode structures during operation of the light emitting diode array module. At least a first light emitting diode structure of the plurality of light emitting diode structures is characterized by a first color. At least a second light emitting diode structure of the plurality of light emitting diode structures is characterized by a second color different than the first color. The first color, the second color, and the optical cross talk between the light emitting diodes are arranged to provide a predefined light distribution in a reference plane perpendicular to an optical axis of the light emitting diode array module. A lighting device can include one or more LED array modules.

A light bulb includes a light emitting device at the base of the bulb and a light guide () that guides the emitted light to a diffusion element () above the base of the bulb. The diffusion element is configured to diffuse the light so as to emulate the predominantly radial light distribution pattern produced by a candle. A variety of features for the diffusion element, as well as features of the base and bulb, are presented that enhance the candle-like effects.

Candle light LED light bulbs

One or more LED dice are mounted on a support structure. The support structure may be a submount with the LED dice already electrically connected to leads on the submount. A mold has indentations in it corresponding to the positions of the LED dice on the support structure. The indentations are filled with a liquid optically transparent material, such as silicone, which when cured forms a lens material. The shape of the indentations will be the shape of the lens. The mold and the LED dice/support structure are brought together so that each LED die resides within the liquid silicone in an associated indentation. The mold is then heated to cure (harden) the silicone. The mold and the support structure are then separated, leaving a complete silicone lens over each LED die. This over molding process may be repeated with different molds to create concentric shells of lenses. Each concentric lens may have a different property, such as containing a phosphor, providing a special radiation pattern, having a different hardness value, or curable by a different technique (e.g., UV vs. heat).

Lens compression molded over LED die

Lenses and certain fabrication techniques are described. A wide-emitting lens refracts light emitted by an LED die to cause a peak intensity to occur within 50-80 degrees off the center axis and an intensity along the center axis to be between 5% and 33% of the peak intensity. The lens is particularly useful in a LCD backlighting application. In one embodiment, the lens is affixed to the backplane on which the LED die is mounted and surrounds the LED die. The lens has a hollow portion that forms an air gap between the LED die and the lens, where the light is bent towards the sides both at the air gap interface and the outer lens surface interface. The lens may be a secondary lens surrounding an interior lens molded directly over the LED die.
