A multimode optical fiber includes a central core surrounded by an outer cladding. The central core has a graded-index profile with respect to the outer cladding and an outer radius rof between about 30 microns and 50 microns (e.g., between about 35 microns and 45 microns). The optical fiber also includes an inner cladding positioned between the central core and the outer cladding, and a depressed trench positioned between the inner cladding and the outer cladding. The multimode optical fiber exhibits reduced bending losses.

Bend-resistant multimode optical fiber

A multimode optical fiber includes a central core and an outer cladding (e.g., an outer optical cladding). Typically, the optical fiber's central core is a depressed, central core having an alpha-index profile (i.e., a graded-index profile), an outer radius r, and a maximum refractive index difference &#x394;nwith respect to the outer cladding. The central core's alpha-index profile has a minimum refractive index at the central core's outer radius rthat corresponds to a refractive index difference &#x394;nwith respect to the outer cladding. Exemplary optical-fiber embodiments may include an inner cladding having an outer radius rand a width w. Exemplary optical-fiber embodiments may include a buried trench having a width wand an outer radius r. Furthermore, exemplary optical-fiber embodiments may include an intermediate cladding having an outer radius rand a width w.

High-bandwidth, radiation-resistant multimode optical fiber

An optical transmission fiber comprises a central core having an index difference &#x394;nwith an outer optical cladding; a first inner cladding having an index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding; and a second buried inner cladding having an index difference &#x394;nwith the outer cladding of less than &#x2212;3&#xb7;10. The second buried inner cladding moreover contains Germanium in a weight concentration of between 0.5% and 7%. The fiber shows reduced bending and microbending losses while exhibiting the optical performances of a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF).

Single mode optical fiber

The present invention embraces an optical fiber that includes a central core having an alpha refractive index profile with respect to an outer optical cladding. The optical fiber also includes an inner cladding and a buried trench. The central core includes a core matrix doped with at least fluorine and a dopant element that increases refractive index. The optical fiber typically has reduced bending losses and cladding effect as well as a high bandwidth at the wavelengths of 850 nanometers and 1300 nanometers for high-data-rate applications.

Broad-bandwidth optical fiber

A multi-mode optical waveguide fiber including a central core region having an outer radius surrounded by an inner cladding region having an outer radius, the inner cladding region having a lower index of refraction than the central core region, wherein both the central core and inner cladding regions are doped with fluorine, wherein the refractive index profile of the central core region is of the gradient index type and the central core region in the range of r&#x3b5;[0-r] comprises germanium at a maximum concentration within the range of 0.5 percent by weight to 4.0 percent by weight taken at a given radius, wherein said fiber has an Overfilled Modal Bandwidth &#x3e;500 MHz&#xb7;km at a wavelength of 850 nm and 1300 nm, according to IEC 60793-2-10.

Depressed graded index multi-mode optical fiber

The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a preform for optical fibers, wherein deposition of glass-forming compounds on the substrate takes place. The present invention furthermore relates to a method for manufacturing optical fibers, wherein one end of a solid preform is heated, after which an optical fiber is drawn from said heated end.

Method of manufacturing an optical fibre preform

A method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform includes the steps of depositing an inner cladding and a central core inside a fluorine doped silica tube and thereafter collapsing the silica tube to form a primary preform. The fluorine doped silica tube has a cross section area that is no more than about 15 percent smaller than the cross section area of the resulting primary preform. The present method facilitates reduced-cost manufacturing of a high-capacity optical fiber preform, which may be drawn to produce an optical fiber having reduced transmission losses.

An optical fiber preform comprises a primary preform that includes at least one inner cladding and a central core deposited inside a fluorine doped silica tube. A method for manufacturing a final optical fiber preform via overcladding of a primary preform having a cross section area is disclosed. The method includes at least one manufacturing step of the primary preform by deposit of an inner cladding and of a central core inside a tube of fluorine-doped silica, the tube being chosen such that it has a cross section area that is maximally about 15% less than the cross section area of the primary preform. With the method of the invention it is possible to manufacture a preform of large capacity at reduced cost which allows the drawing of an optical fiber having reduced transmission losses.

A single mode optical transmission fiber comprises a depressed core having at least 0.41 weight percent fluorine and an index difference (|&#x394;n|) with pure silica greater than 1.5&#xd7;10, a depressed cladding having at least 1.2 weight percent fluorine and an index difference (|&#x394;n|) with pure silica greater than 4.5&#xd7;10and an index difference (|&#x394;n|&#x2212;|&#x394;n|) with the depressed core greater than or equal to 3&#xd7;10.
