A method of purifying a primary color including providing an organic light emitting diode having a diode light output with a broad spectrum that includes a fraction of the primary color. A microcavity structure is formed in cooperation with the organic light emitting diode to define an optical length of the microcavity structure, and the optical length of the microcavity structure being such that light emitted from the microcavity structure is the primary color, purified.

Method of purifying a primary color generated by an OED

An organic EL device includes a cathode, an organic electroluminescent layer and an anode, laminated in sequence. The organic layer is composed of a continuous organic medium A.sub.x B.sub.y, where A and B are components capable of transporting electrons and holes, respectively, x represents the content of the A component with a value ranging from 0 adjacent the anode to 100% adjacent the cathode, and y represents the content of the B component with a value ranging from 0 adjacent the cathode to 100% adjacent the anode. The lifetime of the device is improved by the elimination of heterojunctions in the continuous organic medium and suppression of the re-crystallization tendency of the organic materials. At least one fluorescent dye or pigment is incorporated in the organic layer to improve efficiency and color of the luminescence.

Organic electroluminescent device with continuous organic medium

An organic EL device includes a cathode, an organic electroluminescent layer and an anode, laminated in sequence. The organic layer is composed of a continuous organic medium A.sub.x B.sub.y, where A and B are components capable of transporting electrons and holes, respectively, x represents the content of the A component with a value ranging from 0 adjacent the anode to 100% adjacent the cathode, and y represents the content of the B component with a value ranging from 0 adjacent the cathode to 100% adjacent the anode. Rubrene or a rubrene derivative of high fluorescent efficiency is incorporated in the organic layer to improve efficiency of the luminescence.

Light emitting apparatus comprising a thin film transistor having a current carrying terminal, an organic electroluminescent device for emitting light having a broad spectrum and having a first terminal connected to current carrying terminal, a color converting medium for absorbing light coupled thereto and emitting light in response to absorbed light, and a microcavity coupling emitted light from the organic electroluminescent device to the color converting medium.

Light emitting apparatus is disclosed including a thin film transistor, a capacitor and an organic electroluminescent device. The thin film transistor includes a semiconductive layer having spaced apart first and second doped regions defining first and second current carrying terminals with a channel therebetween, an insulating layer overlying the channel and a control terminal formed on the insulating layer. A portion of the control terminal overlies a portion of the first doped region to form the capacitor. The organic electroluminescent device includes a first terminal connected to the second current carrying terminal.

An organic electroluminescent display device including a layer of organic electroluminescent material disposed between electrodes for emitting an optical effect. The electroluminescent layers providing discrete electroluminescent pixels which are electrically isolated from one another by a first dielectric material wall structure and a second dielectric material wall structure. A full color organic electroluminescent display device including a substrate element and a plurality of thin film transistors, formed on the substrate element. A planarizing layer of insulating material is positioned over the plurality of thin film transistors, thereby defining a substantially planar surface. An organic electroluminescent device with enhanced performance includes anode and cathode electrodes with organic material, single or multiple layers, positioned therebetween and in juxtaposition to each of the electrodes. The organic material is doped with an AMC dopant with a concentration in a range of approximately 0.1 Wt % to 15 Wt % in a region of the organic material adjacent to the cathode electrode. This doped region has a thickness in a range of approximately 20 .ANG. to 600 .ANG.. The dopant includes either a low work function alkaline metal compound, such as LiF, LiCl, KBr, MgF.sub.2, LiO.sub.2, MgO.sub.x, CaO.sub.x, and CsO.sub.x or a low work function alkaline metal alloy, such as Li--Al, Li--In, Sr--Al, Cs--Al.

An active matrix OED array with an improved device cathode includes a plurality of control transistors formed on a semiconductor substrate with insulating material positioned over the control transistors to form a planar surface.
