A hydraulically operated camshaft phasing mechanism has two lock pins. One of the lock pins engages at an intermediate position and an end lock pin engages near one of the stops at the end of the phaser range of authority. At least one of the locking pins, preferably the end lock pin, when the vane is at an end stop position, is engaged by oil pressure and spring loaded to release when the oil pressure side of the end lock pin is vented.

If the key is detected in an off position either restarting the engine; commanding the phaser to the detent mode, such that the lock pin is moved to a locked position and the phaser is locked in an intermediate phase angle position; and shutting down the engine or commanding the phaser to detent mode during engine cranking during a next engine restart.

A variable cam timing phaser with a control valve for directing fluid from a fluid input to and from the advance chamber and the retard chamber of the phaser through an advance line, a retard line, a common line, an advance default line, a retard default line, and at least one exhaust line. The control valve being movable between a default mode and an oil pressure actuated mode. In the default mode, the control valve blocks exhaust lines, retaining fluid within the chambers. The oil pressure actuated mode includes at least an advance mode, a retard mode, and a holding position.

The present invention increases cold temperature oil flow through the variable cam timing (VCT) phaser to reduce the amount of time it takes to replace this oil with warmer low viscosity oil and thereby improve performance. Furthermore the oil flow through the VCT phaser is reduced once the oil temperature reaches the minimum operating temperature for the VCT phaser to operate and the VCT phaser is commanded to move from the park position. Therefore, the VCT phaser is charged with hot engine oil and is commanded to move from the parked position. The VCT phaser reduces oil flow through the phaser at high oil temperatures and low oil viscosity while adding the benefit of increased oil flow through the phaser at low oil temperatures and high oil viscosity to facilitate getting warmer oil into the VCT phaser sooner for increased VCT performance.

Venting mechanism to enhance warming of a variable cam timing mechanism

A variable cam timing phaser for an internal combustion engine including a piloted valve in the rotor assembly, movable from a first position to a second position, and detent lines communicating with the advance chamber or the retard chamber are restricted and or blocked when the rotor assembly is in or near an intermediate phase angle position. When the piloted valve is in the first position, fluid is blocked from flowing through the piloted valve. When the piloted valve is in a second position, fluid is allowed to flow between the detent line from the advance chamber and the detent line from the retard chamber through the piloted valve and a common line, such that the rotor assembly is moved to and held in the intermediate phase angle position relative to the housing assembly.

An internal combustion engine in which the variable cam timing controls for a variable cam timing mechanism include a variable force solenoid mounted within a hollow portion of the camshaft. The variable force solenoid is maintained in place within the hollow camshaft by a tubular shaft fixed to the engine and a bearing between the solenoid and the variable cam timing mechanism.
