A wireless handset or other communication device includes a user interface implemented with a display and a number of select buttons. The display provides an array of identifiers arranged in rows and columns, with the identifiers corresponding generally to lines or functions of a communication system. The display also provides a status indication for each of the identifiers. A status indicator for a line identifier may indicate whether the corresponding line is in use by the handset user, in use by another system user, or idle, while a status indicator for a function identifier may indicate whether the function is activated or deactivated by the handset user. The assignment of identifiers to lines or functions may be in accordance with a mapping from a wired system, and the status information may be supplied to the handset from a switch of the wired system. The handset includes at least one row select button for selecting a particular one of the rows of identifiers provided in the display, and at least one column select button for selecting a particular one of the columns of identifiers. The selection of a particular row and column indicates selection of a line or function associated with the corresponding identifier. The display may be configured such that all of the identifiers and the state of their corresponding status indicators are visible to the user whenever the handset is on.

Display-based interface for a communication device

A cordless telephone set advantageously includes a wireless test mode accessible by a user for evaluating performance levels of operating parameters in the cordless telephone set in diverse geographical locations. When configured in a normal operating mode, the cordless telephone set provides normal wireless communications. When configured in the wireless test mode, the cordless telephone set provides audible and visual input to its user for use in determining a maximum acceptable separation distance for satisfactory communications between a telephone handset unit and its associated base unit in the cordless telephone set. This operating range determination for the cordless telephone set is achieved by providing a simulation of a recognizable tone, such as dial tone, to which a user subjectively listens while testing an application environment. At the same time, statistical readings of signal strength and voice quality also are provided in a display on the telephone handset unit while in this wireless test mode. The simulated tone and the statistical readings allow the user to quickly and easily correlate effective, usable operating range for the cordless telephone set.

Wireless test mode for a cordless telephone

A one-bit-out-of-n bit checking circuit is comprised of k serially connected detector levels. A first one of the detector levels accommodates n input signal lines and successively higher ones of the detector levels have one half the number of input signal lines as does the next lower detector level. Each detector level is comprised of a plurality of logic blocks with each logic block being connected to a separate pair of input signal lines. Each logic block in each level detects the presence of excitation signals on both input signal lines of the pair of input signal lines and generates an error signal in response thereto. Each logic block also detects the presence of an excitation signal on one input signal line of the pair of input signal lines and in response thereto propagates the excitation signal through successively higher detector levels to the k.sup.th detector level. The k.sup.th detector level generates an excitation signal output in response to the presence of an excitation signal on one and only one of the input signal lines applied to the k.sup.th level.

One-bit-out-of-N-bit checking circuit

A memory array, having a plurality of intersecting rows and columns, stores digitized speech. Each row and column intersection consists of a binary storage cell for storing one bit of digitized speech. Incoming digitized speech is loaded into columns of the memory array in a plurality of repetitive loading sequences, each loading sequence including: reading out the bits stored in successive rows of binary storage cells, replacing in each successive row of bits, a predetermined one of the bits in the read out row with a successive one of the bits of the digitized speech and writing each read out row of bits including the replaced bit back into the row. Multibit binary grunts (digitized speech segments) stored in the array are read out therefrom by applying the bits of the grunts to time slots in frames on a time-division highway, each frame being of n bits duration and including one bit from each of n grunts stored in the array. A selected grunt is extracted from the highway by commencing a count of the bits on the highway with a first bit of the selected grunt and by extracting the first bit and every n.sup.th bit thereafter. Memory malfunction is indicated when the number of rows in the array containing parity errors exceeds a predetermined threshold number.
