In a transfer needle () having at least one transfer spring (), this transfer spring () is held, on its one end, in a preferably lateral pocket or recess of the needle body, while the tip of the transfer spring is positioned in a longitudinal slit of the needle body. A knitting machine in accordance with the invention includes a thread guide that is associated with a runner. The runner is disposed to hold open the latches of driven out needles of a first group while the needles of a second group are being driven out. Due to the time-staggered driving-out of the latch-type needles and of a first group and a second group, and due to the alternating arrangement of the needles of the first group and the second group, a rising of the knit fabric while the needles are being driven out is prevented without the assistance of holding-down/knock-over sinkers. Inasmuch as a runner that is separate from the thread guide is used for holding open the latches, the position of said runner can be optimally adjusted independent of the position of the thread guide.

A latch-type needle that is particularly suitable for knitting machines that work without sinkers includes a latch that preferably carries on its outermost end a cam or extension, the cam or extension is provided with a sliding surface. The sliding surface may move along a complementary sliding or runner surface and temporarily prevent the latch from pivoting out of its open position, for example. A corresponding wear of material is concentrated on the sliding surface. A damage, deformation or impairment of other parts of the spoon or latch head, in particular of either of its edges, is prevented.

The component placement set in accordance with the invention for equipping a knitting machine consists of the system components that are required for equipping the knitting machine, said system components being sorted according to type and arranged in one package in different chambers. The chambers are closed all around and protect the packaged system components against environmental influences and against loss. Preferably, the package can be opened only by destroying it, in which case the chambers of the package can be cut open independently of each other. The order of the system components in the individual chambers preferably corresponds to the order in which they are to be placed in the knitting machine. This applies, in particular, to system components having different foot positions.
