There is disclosed a wound closure tape comprising a nonwoven fabric having a pressure-sensitive adhesive uniformly disposed over one surface thereof. The tape is strong enough to hold minor wounds closed, and yet will conform to skin contours and will permit flexing and bending without undue restraint or detachment of the tape. The nonwoven fabric employed in the invention is a web of continuous filaments that are randomly oriented in the plane of the fabric, with the filaments being essentially free of bonding at cross-over points (that is, at points of intersection), and wherein the fabric is emboss bonded in an intermittent pattern.

Conformable, stretchable surgical wound closure tape

An absorbable biologically compatible putty-like composition is used as a matrix from which immunologically or pharmacologically active agents, such as antibiotics, can be introduced into the body to provide a slow sustained release of the agent over an extended period of time. A preferred matrix comprises a mixture of calcium stearate, dextran and castor oil.

Copolymers are prepared from 1,5-dioxepan-2-one and lactide and/or glycolide. The copolymers are useful in surgical applications such as sutures, suture lubricants, and allied surgical products. 1,5-Dioxepan-2-one is produced by a new process comprising first reacting ethylene glycol with an alkyl acrylate to form alkyl 3-(2-hydroxyethoxy)propionate, which is then cyclized by contacting with a trans-esterification catalyst.

Copolymers of lactide and/or glycolide with 1,5-dioxepan-2-one

A synthetic absorbable hemostatic agent for use in the control of osseous hemorrhage, comprising a copolymer of lactide and glycolide containing from about 30% to 70% lactide on a molar basis, and having a molecular weight such that it possesses a putty-like consistency at room temperature. The preferred agent has a lactide/glycolide molar ratio of 65:35 and a molecular weight of between 2000 and 2500 Dalton. The agent may also be mixed with a biocompatible base.

Synthetic absorbable hemostatic agent

A synthetic absorbable hemostatic composition for use in the control of osseous hemorrhage, comprising polydioxanone in a biocompatible base, the polydioxanone having a sufficiently low inherent viscosity such that the composition possesses a putty-like consistency at room temperature. The preferred composition is one in which the polydioxanone comprises between 65% and 75% by weight of the composition.

An absorbable hemostatic composition for use in the control of osseous hemorrhage, comprising a biocompatible fatty acid salt in a biocompatible base, said composition having a putty-like consistency at room temperature. The preferred composition is one in which the fatty acid salt is calcium stearate.

The tie-down properties of multifilament surgical sutures are improved by coating the suture with an absorbable composition comprising a mixture of from about 1 to 4 parts of an absorbable, film-forming polymer, and 1 to 4 parts of a substantially water-insoluble salt of a C.sub.6 or higher fatty acid. Braided sutures coated with from 2 to 10 percent by weight of the composition are characterized by a smooth knot tie-down under both wet and dry conditions.

Absorbable coating composition for sutures

The tie-down properties of multifilament surgical sutures are improved by coating the suture with a composition comprising a gel of a fatty acid salt in a volatile organic solvent. The gel is prepared by refluxing the fatty acid salt in the organic solvent. Sutures coated with the gel are dried to remove the solvent and deposit a residue of the fatty acid salt on the suture. Sutures coated with from 1 to 5 percent by weight of the dry fatty acid salt are characterized by a smooth knot tie-down under both wet and dry conditions.

Coating composition for sutures

A coated, absorbable suture wherein a particular absorbable composition comprising a film-forming polymer, a lubricant and a hydrophobic material is provided for coating sutures, particularly multifilament synthetic absorbable sutures, in order to improve the smoothness in tie-down properties of the sutures.
