The metallic electrode can be physically separated from the GaN-based light emitted region by a layer of porous dielectric, which provides a reflecting region between at least a portion of the metallic electrode and the GaN-based light emitting region.

LEDs with efficient electrode structures

Apparatus and associated methods relate to an energy efficient and pollution reducing post top lamp. In an illustrative example, a replaceable light unit (RLU) includes a LED package distributed about a first axis of the RLU. The LED package, for example, may emit a light being redirected by a first optical element to generate a first optical distribution along a first optical axis in a first direction, the first optical axis being substantially parallel to the first axis. The first optical distribution may be, for example, reflected by a second optical element such that at least a portion of the light in the first optical distribution may be reflected into a second optical distribution. For example, at least fifty percent of the light in the second optical distribution may be greater than fifty degrees from the first optical axis. Various embodiments may advantageously conserve energy and/or reduce light pollution.

Disclosed is an LED luminaire, comprising a housing positionable at a building structure location. The housing has at least one light output boundary and configured to direct light therein toward the light output boundary. A light guide configured to be located at the light output boundary to receive light operationally contained within the housing, so as to emit non-directional light at the light output boundary. At least one first LED light engine is located within the housing, the at least one first LED light engine including at least one first LED light source to emit directional light at the light output boundary.

Luminaire for emitting directional and non-directional light

Apparatus and associated methods relate to powering a constant voltage DC load using a rectified output of a lighting ballast. In an illustrative example, the ballast may be configured to operate as a constant-current source. The DC load may, for example, comprise an array of LED strings connected in parallel. The number of LED strings may, for example, be selected to match a power output of the ballast. The number of LEDs in each string may, for example, be selected to match a rectified voltage output range of the ballast. A normally-open thermostat may, for example, be connected in parallel between the ballast and a rectifier and be configured to short-circuit the ballast if the circuit overheats. Various embodiments may advantageously utilize existing power processing functions of an electronic ballast to reduce complexity of a driver circuit for a constant voltage DC source.

Apparatus and associated methods relate to development of a LED system with high thermal dissipation power relative to the system weight by the inclusion of open regions. The open regions reduce the weight of the optical system while improving airflow. Associated optics are described to efficiently and evenly distribute the light from an LED by tailoring the optical distribution. In addition, circuitry and methods are described to allow for the LED system to operate with existing power sources such as ballast or offline AC voltage sources or both.

An illumination apparatus has a light source having a planar emission surface and a centroid, wherein the surface has a maximum distance L between opposite edges. A lens has an incident surface and an optical axis. In cross section along the optical axis, the incident surface, at a first incident point, is concave or flat to light emitted at a normal from the emissive surface. At a second incident point, the surface an instantaneous angle of curvature, relative to the emissive surface, with an absolute value of no more than 25 degrees to light emitted at an oblique angle greater than 75 degrees from the emissive surface normal. Considered in parallel to the optical axis, the second incident point is within a less than 0.2 L from the first plane. In an orthogonal direction to the optical axis, the second incident point lies within less than 2 L from the centroid.
