An optical modulator includes first and second modulator segments. The first and second modulator segments form an optical signal path for an optical signal. The optical modulator also includes an electrical signal path capable of receiving and carrying a modulation signal, which is applied to the optical signal at the first and second modulation segments to generate a modulated optical signal. An inductive element may be disposed between electrical inputs to the first and second modulator segments. The optical modulator may be an electro-absorption modulator (EAM). The inductive element may be an inductor or a transmission line segment.

An optical device, a method of manufacture thereof, and a system for manufacturing the optical device. The optical device, in an exemplary embodiment, includes an optical component and a reference mark system located on an outer surface of the optical component. The reference mark system provides information regarding a location of an optical path of the optical component.

An electroabsorption modulator comprises a tandem arrangement of a conventional electroabsorption (EA) modulator element and a phase modulator element. The EA modulator element is driven by the digital data signal and the phase modulator is driven by a chirp tuning control signal, such as the complement of the data signal. By controlling the amplitude and/or bias of the chirp tuning control signal, the frequency chirp of the intensity-modulated output signal from the EA modulator element can be controlled.

A method for bonding an oxide-containing member to an aluminum surface, includes the steps of: providing a substrate, wherein a portion of a surface of the substrate has aluminum thereon; positioning an oxide-containing member on the aluminum surface of the substrate; and bonding the oxide-containing member to the aluminum surface by pressing the oxide-containing member against the aluminum surface while simultaneously heating the interface between the oxide-containing member and the aluminum surface. The interface between the oxide-containing member and the aluminum surface is heated with a laser.

A precision grating period measurement system uses a pair of properly positioned photodetectors to provide sub-Angstrom resolution. That is, the absolute position of a first detector with respect to a zero point in the measurement system is assured by including a second photodetector that measures a retroreflected signal. The system is then &ldquo;zeroed&rdquo; on the retroreflected signal such that the subsequent measurements recorded by the first photodetector are a precise measurement of the grating period.

A wavelength stabilized laser system includes a laser that produces a laser light having an amplitude and a wavelength that varies as a function of a temperature of the laser. A temperature control device controls the temperature of the laser. A beam splitter deflects a portion of the laser light. A first detector receives the portion of the laser light from the beam splitter and provides a first signal representing the amplitude of the laser light. A filter has a gain that is a function of the wavelength of the laser light. The filter receives the laser light and outputs a filtered light having an amplitude that varies with the wavelength of the laser light. A second detector provides a second signal representing the amplitude of the filtered light. A sealed housing contains the laser, the first and second detectors and the filter. The housing has a window. An electromagnetic radiation source outside of the housing transmits a calibration beam through the window and through the filter, onto the second detector. One or more processors control the temperature control device based on the first and second signals, and monitor a light transmitting characteristic of the filter based on the second signal.

Apparatus and method for calibrating a wavelength stabilized laser

A wavelength-stabilized laser system includes a laser that produces a laser light. The laser light has an amplitude and a wavelength that varies with the temperature of the laser and/or a bias signal provided to the laser. A temperature control device controls the temperature of the laser. A first detector outputs a first signal representing an amplitude of a laser light. A filter receives the laser light and outputs a filtered light having an amplitude that varies with the wavelength of the laser light. A second detector outputs a second signal representing the amplitude of the filtered light. An electromagnetic radiation source transmits electromagnetic radiation through the filter and through a diverging lens. A third detector receives the electromagnetic radiation that passes through the diverging lens. The second detector may be between the diverging lens and the third detector. The third detector outputs a third signal representing an amplitude of the electromagnetic radiation. A processor generates and transmits a control signal to control the temperature control device or the bias signal based on the first, second and third signals. A sealed housing contains the laser, the first, second and third detectors, the filter, the diverging lens, and the electromagnetic radiation source. The processor may be within or outside the housing. In a variation of the system, the third detector may be between the diverging lens and the second detector; the third detector has a hole or window through which the laser light passes.

Method and apparatus for integrated optical wavelength stabilization

A fixture and method for providing accurate and repeatable alignment and attachment of a semiconductor wafer to a corner cube exposure fixture includes a vacuum-assisted wafer holder of rectangular shape. The wafer holder is first placed upon an L-shaped loading fixture so that a wafer may be positioned against the front surface of the holder and manipulated until the pair of wafer flats abut each leg of the L-shaped fixture. When so aligned, a vacuum is applied to secure the attachment and alignment of the wafer vis-&agrave;-vis the wafer holder. The wafer holder is thereafter inserted in a corner cube exposure fixture, where the fixture is formed to include a right-angle bracket with alignment features formed in one leg of the angle. The wafer holder also includes alignment features in its bottom surface, where these features are formed to mate with the bracket upon attachment. The proper placement and alignment of the wafer holder to the exposure fixture results in the wafer being disposed immediately adjacent to the reflective surface used to form the interference pattern on the wafer surface. The right angle in the fixture ensures that the mirror surface remains orthogonal to the wafer surface such that a uniform grating may be formed across the wafer surface.
