A system and methods for compensating for retinitis pigmentosa for a user include using a head-mounted and user-controllable device that can minify the image to more closely match the user's reduced field of view. The user may adjust the amount of minification and may also adjust the magnification of the image.

Methods and apparatuses for compensating for retinitis pigmentosa

A system and methods for contrast sensitivity compensation provides for correcting the vision of users whose vision is deficient for discerning high spatial frequencies. The system and methods use measurements of the user's contrast detection as a function of spatial frequency in the image to correct images in real time. The system includes a head-mountable device that includes a camera and a processor that can provide enhanced images at video framing rates.

Methods and apparatus for contrast sensitivity compensation

A head-mounted video camera, a processor, and a display are integrated within the head-mounted device worn by the user. The head-mounted device is configured to capture images of the environment and subject those images to specialized processing in order to diagnose and/or make up for deficiencies in the user's eyesight. Different modes of operating the device are provided that enable the user to configure the device for a specific application. Methods of inducing photosensitivity by targeting channelrhodopsin-2 and halorhodopsin to subcellular regions of retinal ganglion cells

A method, device and system for stimulating visual tissue, typically in the retina or visual cortex, to achieve an artificial percept of light or image. The method includes providing stimulating electrodes suitable for placement in proximity to the visual tissue and generating a series of short-duration stimulation signals having a duration of less than about 0.5 milliseconds each. The short-duration stimulation signals are applied through the stimulating electrodes with varying frequencies that are substantially matched to a spiking range of frequencies of at least one ganglion cell for perceiving brightness or image.

Mimicking neural coding in retinal ganglion cells with short pulse electrical stimulation

The main design components underlying the implementation of physiologically faithful retina and other topographic sensory organ models on Cellular Neural Network (CNN) universal chips is discussed. If the various retinas are implemented on a CNN universal chip, in a programmable way, it can be called a 'CNN bionic eye', a device capable of performing a broad range of image processing functions similar to those performed by biological retinas. The CNN universal machine has the special properties that it is 1) programmable and 2) includes local memory. Programming is stored in analog and logical form (the analogic program) generated by an analogic programming and control unit, so the functions of the CNN universal machine can be modified as a function of complex internal and external constraints. Further, several CNN bionic eyes and other topographic sensory modalities can be combined on a single CNN universal chip, and, for more complex sensory tasks, the necessary physical microsensors to provide the input signals can be implemented on the chip, in most instances.
