A phase shift keying modulator. The modulator comprises: a plurality of silicon waveguides provided in a device layer of a silicon-on-insulator platform, the silicon-on-insulator platform including one or more cavities; one or more III-V semiconductor based devices located within the one or more cavities of the silicon-on-insulator platform, each III-V semiconductor-based device including a III-V semiconductor based waveguide which is coupled at an input end to one of the plurality of silicon waveguides and coupled at an output end to another of the plurality of silicon waveguides, each III-V semiconductor based waveguide comprising an active phase modulating portion; and one or more contacts in electrical contact with each active phase modulating portion, such that the phase shift keying modulator is operable to modulate the phase of an optical wave passing through each active phase modulating portion.

The invention provides an optical system and method for outputting a modulated signal comprising a single multimode interference (MMI) device having at least two inputs configured with a fixed phase and an output, wherein the output modulated signal is controlled by modulating the input power of at 5 least one of the inputs. The invention only requires a single MMI device to operate as the relative phase between the two inputs are fixed relative each other and one of the inputs can be used to modulate the output by modulating the power at a single input. In further embodiments, the invention shows how correct phases can be set by a single MMI device. Thus, no more than two 10 MMIs are required in conjunction with phase or amplitude modulating elements to fully generate a BPSK or QPSK signal.

The present invention provides a system and method for creating a coherent optical comb comprising a plurality of lasers, each laser providing an optical output channel; means for combining each optical channel output; a modulator for modulating the combined optical channel outputs, to provide a modulated signal; means for feeding back said modulated signal to said plurality of lasers, such that each laser output channel is phase and/or frequency locked with respect to at least one other of said plurality of lasers. A discrete optical comb is obtained without the need for excessively high power laser outputs and only employs a single (optional) wavelength locker for all channels.

A monolithic optical transmitter photonic integrated circuit (TxPIC) comprises a plurality of integrated modulated sources which, when all operated at constant current, display a power output that varies as a function of array position similar to a quadratic-shaped curve and, further, forming an array of signal channels each having a different wavelength output. An optical combiner/decombiner is integrated in the circuit and has at least one free space region with a plurality of ordered bands along its edge where the zero order band is substantially at a longitudinal centerline of the free space region and where, on either side of this band, is a first order band followed by additional higher order bands. The ends of the output waveguides from the modulated sources are coupled approximate to the free space region edge along a region of the zero order band between one of the adjacent first order bands and a longitudinal centerline of the zero order band so that the inputs of the signal channels to the combiner of are titled or offset with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the combiner free space region so the combined outputs from the optical combiner will be aligned along the slope of the quadric-shaped curve of the combiner output passband envelope. The tilted combiner/decombiner may also be deployed in a receiver photonic integrated circuit (RxPIC) or other circuit employing such a device.

A monolithic photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chip where the active waveguide cores of the modulated sources of the PIC are multiple quantum wells (MQWs) and the passive waveguide cores of an optical combiner are a bulk layer or material. The cores of the waveguide cores may be a quaternary such as InGaAsP or InAlGaAs.

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs), also referred to as opto-electronic integrated circuits (OEICs), and more particularly to a PIC in the form of an optical receiver PIC or RxPIC chip and an optical transmitter PIC (TxPIC) are employed in an optical transport network. Integrated on the RxPIC chip, starting at the input end which is coupled to receive multiplexed optical data signals from an optical transport network is an optical amplifier, an optical demultiplexer, and a plurality of on-chip photodiodes (PDs) each to receive a demultiplexed data signal from the AWG DEMUX for optical-to-electrical signal conversion. The optical input amplifier may be an on-chip gain clamped semiconductor optical amplifier (GC-SOA) or an off-chip fiber amplifier. The optical input amplifier may be optional if the channel signal demultiplexer provides for minimal insertion loss which is optimum with a properly designed arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) demultiplexer.

A monolithic photonic integrated circuit (PIC) chip comprises an array of modulated sources providing a plurality of channel signals of different wavelengths and an optical combiner coupled to receive the channel signals and produce a combined output of the channel signals. The arrays of modulated sources are formed as ridge waveguides to enhance the output power from the respective modulated sources so that the average output power from the sources is approximately 2 to 4 times higher than in the case of comparable arrays of modulated sources formed as buried waveguides.
