This invention is addressed to an improved size composition for use in the treatment of glass fibers in the manufacture of glass fiber textiles, glass fiber reinforced plastics, and glass fiber reinforced elastomeric products wherein the size is formulated to contain, as the essential ingredients, a polybutadiene graft copolymer and a glass fiber anchoring agent. Bundles of glass fibers sized with the composition of the invention are particularly well suited for impregnation with an elastomer compatible material containing a resorcinol-aldehyde resin component and an elastomer component for use in the manufacture of glass fiber reinforced elastomeric products.

A hardenable binder composition is disclosed. The composition comprises a phenolic resin, hydroxyethylcellulose and a silane. The hydroxyethylcellulose being added in an amount sufficient to increase the wet tensile strength of the binder composition after cure thereof.

We have found that if we add a polyhydric phenolic compound such as resorcinol to monohydric phenolic resin/cement systems, we can shorten the gel time sufficiently to use the systems in producing walls. The walls generally are cylindrical and serve to confine a liquid. These systems are especially good for producing large diameter, continuous pipe.

Wall construction

We have developed molding compounds from cement in combination with a nylon or polyester resin. We form the resin in the presence of the cement. We can use these molding compounds to form molded articles which have good fire resistance.

Molding compounds

We have developed a polyvinyl chloride foam with a smooth surface and uniform cell size. The foams also are resilient and abrasion resistant, making them especially suited for use in carpeting materials. To do this, we add along chain silane or epoxide to the foam.

A composition for use in the treatment of glass fibers to promote a strong bonding relationship between glass fibers and plastics and elastomeric materials comprising a silanized butadiene polymer which has been reacted with a halosilane and the product reacted with an epoxide to replace the halogen groups of the silane with beta-haloalkoxy groups.

Organo silicon compounds prepared by reaction of a dialkyl hydrazine of the formula ##EQU1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each alkyl with an epoxy silane such as an epoxy silane of the formula ##EQU2## or an epoxy silane of the formula ##SPC1## Where y is an integer and R.sub.5 is alkyl. A method for producing a phenolic molding is disclosed. The method includes the steps of mixing phenol, formaldehyde and a hydraulic cement, forming the resulting composition to a predetermined shape and maintaining the composition in the predetermined shape until an insoluble, infusible article is formed by condensation. At least 10 percent of the hydraulic cement must be Portland cement. The mole ratio of formaldehyde to phenol must be at least 1:1, and the amount of hydraulic cement must be sufficient for reaction with from 1 to 9 times the sum of the water of condensation of the phenol with the formaldehyde and the water charged to the mix. The use of reinforcing glass fibers in producing phenolic moldings is also disclosed, as well as the use of urea and resorcinol in addition to the phenol, formaldehyde and hydraulic cement.
