A user manipulated apparatus for producing straight construction lines on sheet material includes a linearly extensive frame with integrally formed handle and an expendable marking strip affixed to a bottom edge of the frame. A user positions the frame so that its ends are in registry with the endpoints of a desired construction line, with the marking strip contacting the surface of the sheet material. The user then linearly displaces the frame a short distance along its length so that the marking strip rubs along the surface of the sheet material and produces a visible construction line. The portion of the frame that supports the marking substance may be compliant to ensure that the marking substance fully engages the surface of the sheet material even when the sheet material has surface irregularities or is not perfectly planar.

A circuit for measuring mechanical stress impressed on a printed circuit board includes a number of electrically conductive pads formed on at least one outer surface of the printed circuit board, and a resistive material applied in a pattern to the printed circuit board and defining a resistor between first and second ones of the number of electrically conductive pads. The resistive material exhibits an electrical resistance that varies as the resistive material is deformed so that the resistor exhibits an electrical resistance value that varies as a function of mechanical stress impressed on the printed circuit board sufficient to deform the resistive material defining the resistor. Any number of such resistors may be formed on or within the printed circuit board, and any such resistor may form part of an external resistor bridge network configured to monitor changes in its resistance value.

A method of forming a circuit board with electronic assemblies lying in different planes, includes providing a single circuit board with entire electronic assemblies pressed thereon. A channel is then formed in the circuit board of a predetermined depth to divide the circuit board into two separate, but integral portions. The circuit board is then bent at a point between the first and second portions of the circuit board such that the second portion of the circuit board can be bent between 0 and 180 degrees with respect to the first portion of the circuit board.

Method of forming assemblies of circuit boards in different planes

An electrical package, such as a stereo for an automobile comprises a chassis and one or more subassemblies adapted to mate with the chassis. One or more flanges extend from the chassis and each subassembly includes one or more edges each adapted to be securely held in place by one or more of the flanges. Preferably, the flanges and the edges are adapted to mate in sliding engagement with one another. Thus, the electrical package can be assembled without the use of threaded fasteners.

Integrated slides for high volume production of electronic components

An apparatus and method for attaching an electrical component to a convector attached to a chassis of an electrical package is disclosed. The convector comprises one or more slide tracks adapted to receive a spring clamp that provides the sole means for securing a heat-generating component to the convector. The spring clamp includes a flange adapted to be grasped for insertion into the slide tracks, and adapted to cover an opening in the chassis. The spring clamp also includes a pair of prongs, each adapted to fit within one of the slide tracks, and spaced apart from one another so as to capture a rectangular protrusion on the convector therebetween when inserted into the slide tracks. Each prong preferably includes a locking hook that engages the rectangular protrusion. The locking hooks cause the prongs to be spread apart as the spring clamp is inserted into the slide tracks, and once the locking hooks reach the transverse slot, the locking hooks snap into position engaging the rectangular protrusion, providing audible, tactile and visual confirmation that the spring clamp is securely fastened to the convector.

Moisture condensed on a circuit board can cause dendritic growth which can short out a circuit. Such sensitive areas are protected from condensation by filling cavities in an assembly with insulating material to exclude moisture bearing air. Foamed plastic is molded or stamped into shapes which conform to a cavity and are inserted into the assembly. The plastic body is held against the circuit board to preclude condensation on the board. Adhesives and sealants are not required.

Disclosed is a robotic device having a sub-assembly constructed and arranged for zero error Z-axis compliance. The sub-assembly includes a vertically positioned bearing assembly having a shaft received in a ball bushing. The ball bushing may be received in a race. Spherical-shaped bearings are positioned in the bushing and project outwardly from the outer and inner surfaces of the bushing to form a smooth linear traveling surface. A plurality of lines of bearings may be positioned in the bushing. Each line of bearings may be skewed from the longitudinal axis of the bushing so that the lines of bearings form a blanket bearing surface covering substantially the outer surface of the shaft and inner surface of a race. In such a construction each bearing engages a different portion of the shaft and race as the bushing and shaft move in a vertical direction along the Z-axis. This reduces the wear on all contact surfaces and prolongs the life of the sub-assembly.
