A shielding and grounding ring comprises a cup shaped member including a flat ring portion defining the base of the cup and having a central opening sized to fit about a plug shell, a skirt described by a plurality of slots and associated fingers each extending longitudinally from the end of the skirt to locations on the ring portion, and a circumferential lip extending rearwardly from the opening. When a compression ring is plastically deformed in the groove, the lip and the ring portion, respectively, make substantially 360.degree. contact with the annular groove and the radial flange thereby providing positive retention and completing electrical circuit paths with the plug shell. The slots undergo a 90.degree. change in direction to reduce adverse stress which could lead to spring finger failures in the ring.

Circumferential grounding and shielding ring for an electrical connector

An electrical connector including a pair of interfittable shells 11, 21, an annular shield ring 60 for protecting electrical contacts carried therein from RFI/EMI interference and means for mounting the shield ring to one of the shells, the one shell 21 having a radial flange 22 forwardly of an annular groove 50 sized to receive an annular band 62 of the shield 60. The mounting means are solderless and comprise an annular compression ring 40 sized to circumpose the annular groove 50 and be plastically deformed therein. The annular groove includes a frusto-conical wall 54 which serves to control plastic deformation of compression ring 40 so as to invade the groove 50 to press against shield band 62 and thereby secure the ring therein. Means 63 for resisting rotation of the shield ring are provided.

Electrical connector

An improved electrical connector of the type having a cylindrical shell 22 having a radial flange portion 26, a longitudinal key portion 29 and a frequency shielding ring 49 sized to fit over the shell and mount adjacent to the flange portion, characterized by one of the portions having a keyway 50 having a pair of abutment faces 51, 53 and the shielding ring including a detent portion 46 having a pair of spaced end faces 47, 49, a first of the end faces being configured to abut the first of the abutment faces and the second of the end faces being configured to abut the second of the abutment faces when the detent portion is fit within the keyway, whereby abutting the faces causes the ground ring to be properly oriented on the shell and prevented from rotating relative to the shell.
