A battery includes a redox flow anode chamber coupled to an anode current collector, a separator, and an external container in fluid connection with the redox flow anode chamber. The external container has therein a solid phosphorus material. A first redox-active mediator and the second redox-active mediator are circulated through the half-cell electrode chamber and the external container. During a charging cycle the first redox-active mediator is reduced at the current collector electrode and the reduced first mediator reduces the phosphorus material, and wherein during a discharging cycle the second redox-active mediator is oxidized at the anode current collector electrode, and the second redox-active mediator is then reduced by the reduced phosphorus material. A method of operating a battery and a method of making a battery are also discussed.

High capacity organic radical mediated phosphorous anode for redox flow batteries

A supercapacitor according to the present invention includes a negative carbon-comprising electrode which does not intercalate sodium, and a positive carbon-comprising electrode. An electrolyte composition comprises sodium hexafluorophosphate and a non-aqueous solvent comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, diethylene glycol dimethyl ether, triethylene glycol dimethyl ether, and tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether. The supercapacitor has an electrochemical voltage window of from +0.0 V to 3.5 V (full cell voltage). The electrolyte has an electrochemical voltage window of from +0.05 V to 3.9 V vs. Na/Na+. A method of making and a method of operating a supercapacitor is also disclosed.

High voltage window electrolyte for supercapacitors

A supercapacitor and a related electrolyte composition suitable for use in a supercapacitor are provided. An electrolyte composition can include a conductive sodium salt component comprising NaTFSI and a non-aqueous solvent component comprising dimethoxy ethane (DME). The conductive sodium salt component and the non-aqueous solvent component can be present at a molar ratio of NaTFSI:DME of 1:1 to 1:3, inclusive.

Electrolytes for supercapacitors

The fundamental charge storage mechanisms in a number of currently studied high energy redox couples are based on intercalation, conversion, or displacement reactions. With exception to certain metal-air chemistries, most often the active redox materials are stored physically in the electrochemical cell stack thereby lowering the practical gravimetric and volumetric energy density as a tradeoff to achieve reasonable power density. In a general embodiment, a mediated redox flow battery includes a series of secondary organic molecules that form highly reduced anionic radicals as reaction mediator pairs for the reduction and oxidation of primary high capacity redox species ex situ from the electrochemical cell stack. Arenes are reduced to stable anionic radicals that in turn reduce a primary anode to the charged state. The primary anode is then discharged using a second lower potential (more positive) arene. Compatible separators and solvents are also disclosed herein.

Polyarene mediators for mediated redox flow battery

A processed polysiloxane resin binder for use in electrochemical components and the method for fabricating components with the binder. The binder comprises processed polysiloxane resin that is partially oxidized and retains some of its methyl groups following partial oxidation. The binder is suitable for use in electrodes of various types, separators in electrochemical devices, primary lithium batteries, electrolytic capacitors, electrochemical capacitors, fuel cells and sensors.

Electrochemical components employing polysiloxane-derived binders

A battery component structure employing inorganic-silicate binders. In some embodiments, casting or coating of components may be performed using aqueous slurries of silicates and electrode materials or separator materials.

Battery components employing a silicate binder

Provided are methods of forming an electrode suitable for use in an electrochemical cell, and novel electrodes which can be formed therefrom. The methods involve the steps of: (a) forming an electrode slurry from components comprising a solvent, a polymeric binder material and a solid electrode material, wherein the polymeric binder material is formed by modifying a polyolefin with at least one unsaturated polycarboxylic acid or an anhydride of the acid, chlorinating the modified polyolefin and partially crosslinking carboxyl groups or acid anhydride groups on the chlorinated, modified polyolefin with an epoxy group of a compound which has at least two epoxy groups per molecule; (b) coating the electrode slurry on a substrate; and (c) evaporating the solvent. Also provided are electrochemical cells which include the inventive electrodes. The invention has particular applicability to the manufacture of nonaqueous electrochemical power supplies.

Electrode containing a polymeric binder material, method of formation thereof and electrochemical cell

A method of forming a porous composite separator layer for an electrochemical cell comprising the steps of printing a thin layer of a separator precursor solution on the surface of one of the electrochemical cell electrodes, curing the thin layer of separator precursor solution so that it transforms into a microporous composite separator structure. In the preferred embodiment, the separator precursor solution is formulated as an ink comprising a silica aerogel filler material dispersed in a solution of chlorinated polyolefin binder which is dissolved in a suitable solvent. The process allows the manufacture of thin and flexible composite separators which are conformally bonded to the underlying electrodes.

A process for manufacturing an electrochemical cell comprising the steps of providing an electrode and applying electrolyte to the electrode using an ink-jet printer. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, an ink-jet printing process is utilized to print the electrolyte onto the surface of the electrodes and separators or the electrode/separator bilayers. The ink-jet printing accurately meters and uniformly distributes the electrolyte throughout the pore structure of the separator and the electrode without contaminating the cell gasket. Preferably, a drop-on-demand ink-jet printing head is used to facilitate the electrolyte printing process. The ink-jet printing head is electronically pulsed to form and eject the electrolyte droplets from a nozzle of printing-head. The volume and the distribution of each electrolyte droplet are accurately determined and controlled by varying the pulse width and the pulse frequency of the printing head.

Process for filling electrochemical cells with electrolyte

A method for making near-net-shape, monolithic carbon electrodes for energy storage devices. The method includes the controlled pyrolysis and activation of a pressed shape of methyl cellulose powder with pyrolysis being carried out in two stages; pre-oxidation, preferably in air at a temperature between 200.degree.-250.degree. C., followed by carbonization under an inert atmosphere. An activation step to adjust the surface area of the carbon shape to a value desirable for the application being considered, including heating the carbon shape in an oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature of at least 300.degree. C., follows carbonization.

Method for making carbon super capacitor electrode materials

Novel hybrid thin film electrolyte, based on an organonitrile solvent system, which are compositionally stable, environmentally safe, can be produced efficiently in large quantity and which, because of their high conductivities .apprxeq.10.sup.-3 .OMEGA..sup.-1 cm.sup.-1 are useful as electrolytes for rechargeable lithium batteries.

Thin film polymeric gel electrolytes

A secondary battery having a rechargeable lithium-containing anode, a cathode, and a separator positioned between the cathode and anode with an organic electrolyte solution absorbed therein is provided. The anode comprises three-dimensional microporous carbon structures synthesized by the controlled pyrolysis of gel derived polymer foam precursors. The gradual heating process in the carbonization of pretreated foam precursors stabilizes the pore structures in the pretreated foam.
