Registration is maintained as between an electron beam and that portion of a light-emissive interface selected for visualizing beam-defined characters by providing a discernible indicium on the interface at a location exterior to the selected interface portion and interacting the beam with interface area inclusive of the indicium. Signals are generated by a detector viewing such interface area and information for correction of beam deflection is obtained from the signals.

Method and system for registration in CRT typesetting

A series of velocity curves are generated empirically to create a library of information from which a pulse rate for a stepper motor may thereafter be called upon to drive a load a given distance in the minimum time without rebound, known as ringing.

Photocomposer escapement carriage control

In photocomposition, when change in point size is made, rather than change iris opening, a programmable flash intensity provides the required irradiance. Iris setting is made only to compensate for film or paper sensitivity, flash lamp efficiency, and energy storage capacitor variations.

Exposure control system for photocomposition machines

A shaft encoder of negligible moment of inertia. A grating provides a grid pattern of transmitted light. A mirror on the shaft sweeps the pattern. A lens focuses the sweep over a mask of like grid pattern. A photocell is activated by light transmitted through the mask whenever there is a register of the grating image with the mask. By using a mask of N grid lines per unit of measure, and a mask of N plus 1, two cells will be able to detect direction of shaft rotation.

Shaft encoder

A system for intermixing large and small size type in a photocomposer by coordinating speed of a disc font storage medium with the size of type to be set. The speed of the disc drive motor is controlled by pulses of power to the motor. A signal frequency which is used to produce the pulses simultaneously controls the speed of the disc driven motor and a counter which is allowed to count out only at specified times in relation to the matrix relative position and thereby inform a controller of the matrix position.

Photocomposition machine

A system for establishing the speed of an electric motor, particularly a direct current motor. The principal use is in the control of a drive motor for a photocomposition machine font disc. The speed is controlled by spacing pulses of power to the motor. The pulses are derived from a central output of a left shift--right shift register. Shift in one direction is obtained from a uniform clock source, and in the opposed direction from a generator responsive to motor speed. When the motor speed causes the register to shift left beyond the control output, power is cut off and the motor slows. Slowing will allow right shift and a renewal of power pulses.
