Methods for reducing aluminosilicate containing scale in a Bayer process involving treating a Bayer process equipment surface with a scale inhibiting composition having high ionic strength prior to exposure to a Bayer process stream.

Method of reducing scale in the bayer process

Materials and a method are provided whereby polymers with least 0.5 mole % of the pendant group or end group containing &#x2014;Si(OR&#x2033;)3 (where R&#x2033; is H, an alkyl group, Na, K, or NH4) are used to control aluminosilicate scaling in an industrial process having an alkaline process stream such as a pulping mill process stream. When materials of the present invention are added to the alkaline process stream, they reduce and even completely prevent formation of aluminosilicate scale on equipment surfaces such as evaporator walls and heating surfaces. The present materials are effective at treatment concentrations that make them economically practical.

The processing of bauxite in the Bayer Process results in the formation of titanaceous, siliceous, and other scale on equipment and apparatus such that a great deal of time and effort is spent in order to maintain the process at its height efficiency by reducing or eliminating the same. The scale is treated, reduced, altered, etc., according to the present invention by the use of hydroxamated polymers having weight average molecular weights of over about 10,000.
