A computer-implemented method according to one embodiment includes receiving a plurality of backup requests at a data storage system having a data storage library. At least some of the backup requests have unique service-metadata associated therewith. Each backup request is placed in a backup queue, where an ordering of the backup requests within the backup queue is based at least in part on the service-metadata. Backup operations are performed on the data storage system in accordance with the ordering of the backup requests within the backup queue. A computer program product for determining resource allocation in a backup environment according to another embodiment includes a computer readable storage medium having program instructions embodied therewith. The program instructions are readable and/or executable by a computer to cause the computer to perform the foregoing method.

Performance of backup operations in an order determined using service-metadata associated with backup requests

Methods, computer program products, devices, and/or systems are provided that perform the following operations: receiving data from an incoming data stream; separating the data into data chunks and storing the data chunks in accordance with a selection configuration matrix in a set of different matrix buffers until the matrix buffers are filled up; processing the data chunks by multiple processing units, each processing unit associated to a matrix buffer of the matrix buffers via an I/O block; providing the processed data chunks as inputs to a neural network component; and classifying the data and filtering the data based on a classification of the data by the neural network component.

Classifying and filtering data from a data stream

A method for verification of content of tape cartridges in a tape library system using tape drives of the tape library, is provided. The method includes instructing the tape drive to perform tape cartridge verification on the tape cartridge. The method further includes after completion of the tape cartridge verification, unloading the tape cartridge to its original storage position. The method further includes transmitting verification data of the tape cartridge verification to a database of the tape library system for analysis.

A computer-implemented method according to one embodiment includes receiving and storing historical data for historical data jobs performed within a data storage system; determining an optimal maintenance time for the data storage system, utilizing the stored historical data; determining a timing in which storage devices within the data storage system are taken offline, utilizing the optimal maintenance time and the stored historical data; and preparing the data storage system for one or more maintenance operations, utilizing the determined timing.

Determining an optimal maintenance time for a data storage system utilizing historical data

A method, computer system, and computer program product for determining head wear of magnetic tape head elements of tape drives during operation. The method may include receiving a first calibration parameter for a first tape head element at a first time. Calibration parameter for the first tape head element may be compared with a reference parameter. Determination may be made whether to remove the first tape head element from service or generate a warning, based on a result of the comparison. Method may include generating the first calibration parameter by calculating midpoint bias voltage for the first tape head element as a function of bias current and head resistance. The first calibration parameter for the first tape head element may be bias current parameter or bias resistance parameter. The first calibration parameter for the first tape head element may be less than, equal to, or greater than the reference parameter.

Predicting failure of a magnetic tape head element

An access operation performed by a tape drive is detected. The access operation is performed on a tape medium. The access operation has one or more performance characteristics. The performance characteristics of the detected access operation are compared with one or more predefined performance thresholds. The comparison is in response to detecting the access operation. An operation performance of the tape medium is determined. The determination is based on comparing the performance characteristics with the predefined performance thresholds. A table associated with the tape medium is updated based on the operational performance of the tape medium. The table is stored in a non-volatile storage.

For adding cooperative file coloring protocols in a data deduplication system using a processor device in a computing environment, a preferred character is represented for file coloring in a file using a code selected from a multiplicity of codes that represent a variety of contexts. The original meaning of the preferred character is retained when representing the preferred character for the file coloring by the code selected from the multiplicity of codes. The file is deduplicated by the data deduplication system according to the file coloring that represents a source file of a backup application.

Systems for synchronization of host and client log timestamps are provided. One system includes a timing module that acquires an initiator timestamp, wherein the initiator timestamp indicates a time on an initiating device associated with a computational activity performed between the initiating device and a receiving device. Additionally, the system includes a communication module that transmits the initiator timestamp to the receiving device. Also, the system includes a synchronization module that associates a receiver record of the computational activity on the receiving device with the initiator timestamp.

The present invention may include receiving a plurality of sensor data from a plurality of sensors mounted within the tape system. The present invention may then include determining that the received plurality of sensor data is abnormal. The present invention may lastly include sending the generated alert to a program manager.

A data storage cartridge according to one embodiment comprises a housing configured to house a data storage medium, a sensor coupled to the housing, and a microcontroller coupled to the sensor. The microcontroller is configured to wirelessly communicate information about the sensor. Other embodiments relate to a data storage cartridge comprising a housing configured to house a data storage medium, a cartridge memory coupled to the housing, the cartridge memory having a wireless communications interface, and a microcontroller in physical communication with the cartridge memory. The microcontroller is configured to wirelessly communicate information retrieved from the cartridge memory. Additional embodiments relate to a data storage cartridge comprising a mechanical write protect mechanism coupled to the housing of the data storage cartridge, an actuator coupled to the mechanical write protect mechanism for selectively changing a state of the mechanical write protect mechanism, and a microcontroller configured to control the actuator.

Remotely controlling a magnetic tape cartridge

A media device may comprise a controller, a tape head, a tape comprising tape-position indicia, an indicia detection device, and an adjusting device. The indicia detection device may be configured to detect the tape-position indicia and provide an output corresponding to a tape position. The controller may be configured to send an adjustment command based on the output. The adjusting device may be configured to adjust the media device between a first configuration and a second configuration, based on the adjustment command. The tape may physically contact the tape head in the first configuration and not physically contact the tape head in the second configuration.

A data stream is stored in storage media. As part of the storage, the data stream is divided into a plurality of chunks. In response to the determination, a first pointer to the existing stored chunk is created in file metadata for the file. Also in response to the determination, a second pointer to a first stored chunk that matches the first chunk is created in chunk metadata embedded with the existing stored chunk.
