A method for operating a surgical microscope having a camera is described. The method includes the following steps: a code that is able to be captured in a set frequency range is introduced into the field of view of the camera, at least one image which includes the code is captured via the camera, an evaluation device is used to identify the code and compare the latter to set features of a code required to activate at least one function, and if the identified code has the set features, the activation of the function is authorized.

A protection glass adapter for a surgical microscope has a first abutment surface which can be brought into contact with a corresponding second abutment surface of the microscope. The adapter has a guide opening for receiving a main objective. The guide opening is a truncated cone with a central axis. The greater diameter of the truncated cone is formed toward the first abutment surface. A positioning element of the adapter is rigid and arranged on the first abutment surface. The positioning element is received with form-fit engagement in a mating element on the surgical microscope. The adapter has a holding element. A holding force in the form of a magnetic force can be applied by the holding element parallel to the central axis between the adapter and the microscope.

The stand base is for setting up on a floor configured as a planar surface and includes at least a first weight module; a base body defining an underside and accommodating the first weight module; a support arrangement connected to the base body and supporting the stand base with at least three support points in contact engagement with the floor to permit setting up the stand base; the support points conjointly defining a support plane whereat the support points are in contact engagement with the floor; the underside of the base body facing toward the support plane; an ancillary body; the base body having a receiving arrangement in the underside for releasably accommodating the ancillary body; and, the underside of the base body and the support plane conjointly defining a smallest spacing therebetween which is greater than 10 cm.
