The principles and embodiments of the present invention relate to methods and systems for safely providing NO to a recipient for inhalation therapy. There are many potential safety issues that may arise from using a reactor cartridge that converts NOto NO, including exhaustion of consumable reactants of the cartridge reactor. Accordingly, various embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods of determining the remaining useful life of a NO2-to-NO reactor cartridge and/or a break-through of NO, and providing an indication of the remaining useful life and/or break-through.

Method for supplying a high purity gas product comprising providing a first gas stream including a major component and at least one impurity component, determining the concentration of the at least one impurity component, and comparing the concentration so determined with a reference concentration for that component. When the value of the concentration so determined is less than or equal to the reference concentration, the first gas stream is utilized to provide the high purity gas product. When the value of the concentration so determined is greater than the reference concentration, a second gas stream comprising the major component is provided and the first and second gas streams are mixed to yield a mixed gas stream having a concentration of the at least one impurity component that is less than the reference concentration. The second gas stream is provided by dividing the first gas stream into a first substream and a second substream, removing at least a portion of the at least one impurity component in the first substream to provide a purified substream, and mixing the purified substream with the second substream to provide the high purity gas product. The mixed gas stream is utilized to provide the high purity gas product.

In-line gas purity monitoring and control system

A system for detecting fine liquid, e.g., oil, particles in a gas system having a conduit through which a gas, e.g., hydrogen, air, etc., will flow. The detection system includes a monitor including a high sensitivity photometric sensor, a data acquisition unit and flow and pressure control components to control the pressure and rate of flow of the gas to the monitor. The detection system is arranged to detect the presence of fine liquid particles the gas passing through the conduit and to provide an alert signal representative of the mass count of such particles in response thereto.

A system for detecting fine liquid, e.g., oil, particles in a gas system having a high pressure compressor and at least two gas handling devices, e.g., a coalescer and at least one adsorber. The detection system uses plural sensors and a monitor unit to detect the presence of such fine liquid particles in various portions of the gas system and to provide alert signals in response thereto. The alert signals can be used by associated valves to control the gas system.

A method for detecting the undesirable entry of oxygen into a transfer system that transfers liquid hydrogen from a liquid hydrogen source into a container. A nozzle for use in the transfer system for dispensing liquid hydrogen comprises a housing and an oxygen sensor positioned inside the nozzle for detecting the concentration of oxygen in the nozzle when the liquid hydrogen is not flowing. The sensor emits a signal indicative of the concentration of oxygen in the transfer system before the liquid hydrogen begins transferring. The signal is received by a controller and prevents transfer of liquid hydrogen until the oxygen is removed from the transfer system.

An apparatus and process for measuring the concentration of hydrogen gas being transferred through a nozzle from a source container to a destination container and for providing an alert and/or taking action where hydrogen gas leaks may create an unsafe condition. The invention can accurately and reproducibly respond to and measure the absolute hydrogen gas concentration within the nozzle housing using hydrogen gas sensors that are selective only to hydrogen, which do not require the presence of oxygen to operate and which do not saturate when hydrogen safety levels are reached. These sensors are positioned inside the nozzle housing to allow for the direct and immediate knowledge of the presence of hydrogen gas that cannot be safely determined by other means. An apparatus and process for detecting leaks of liquid hydrogen through a nozzle during transfer of liquid hydrogen from a source container to a destination container are also discussed.

A stable concentrated aqueous emulsion of perfluorochemical, a phospholipid and a triglyceride of fatty acids has been demonstrated which has enhanced stability, diminished particle size and heightened tolerance by biological systems. The emulsion has utility as an oxygen transport medium, such as artificial blood. The emulsion can optionally include additional emulsifiers of SURFYNOL.RTM.SE surfactant and PLURONIC.RTM. P-105 surfactant. The emulsion is produced using an improved emulsification technique. The invention includes methods of oxygen transport in vascular systems wherein the oxygen carrying capacity of the vascular systems is improved with the emulsions of the present invention. Methods are also described for organ preservation extra-vivo by perfusing, suffusing, flushing and filling organs outside the body with the oxygen carrying emulsions of the present invention. Finally, methods of synthesis of the emulsions by emulsifying the components and aqueous medium using high shear mixing is also described.
