A moldable refractory composition containing from about 42 to about 83% by weight of a liquid vehicle, such as water; from about 13 to 50% by weight of ceramic fiber; from about 0.5 to 7% by weight of an inorganic binder derived from an inorganic colloidal dispersion having active hydroxyl groups capable of reacting with hydroxyl groups of the ceramic fiber; and from about 0.5 to 5% by weight of a high molecular weight organic resin which serves multiple functions including tackifier of the wet composition, cohesiveness of the wet composition, appropriate rheology of the wet composition to provide shelf life and a wide range of applications and in dry composition to provide green strength. Also described is the method of manufacture for the subject refractory moldable composition. Upon drying, the moldable composition adheres well to surfaces such as those encountered in furnacing applications and construction applications to metals and other ceramic materials and dries to give an essentially crack-free refractory shape which exhibits greater resilience than heretofore known moldable refractory compositions. The dried moldable composition is useful as thermal insulation at temperatures up to 1650.degree. C. (3000.degree. F.) dependent upon the type of ceramic fibers and inorganic binders contained as ingredients in the composition.

Ceramic fiber refractory moldable compositions

What is disclosed are aqueous compositions which are useful for coating solid substrates such as glass, plastic and metal. The aqueous compositions comprise colloidal silica, a phenolic resin, water and at least one hydrolyzable silane. An example of such a composition is colloidal silica, phenolic resin, water and CH.sub.3 SiO.sub.3/2 obtained from CH.sub.3 Si(OCH.sub.3).sub.3.

What is disclosed is a method of preparing fiber reinforced glass composites from high modulus fibers and resin sols of organosilsesquioxanes, metal oxides, and metal alkoxides. The composites are obtained by firing a partially cured, pressed, and post-cured prepreg to an elevated temperature in an inert atmosphere. A simple, low temperature laminating procedure is used in the preparation of these composites in place of the standard hot pressing technique.

Fiber reinforced glass matrix composites

What is disclosed is a method of preparing fiber reinforced glass composites from high modulus fibers and organopolysiloxane resins. The composites are obtained by firing a partially cured, pressed, and post-cured prepreg to an elevated temperature in an inert atmosphere. A simple, low temperature laminating procedure is used in the composite preparation in place of the standard hot pressing technique.

Non-ferrous metal substrates such as aluminum are coated with a composition consisting essentially of a dispersion of colloidal titania particles in a water/polar organic solvent medium of a partial condensate formed by hydrolyzing a silane such as methyltrimethoxysilane in the presence of the colloidal titania particles and in the presence of a sufficient amount of an acid such as acetic acid to provide a pH in the range of from 2 to 6. Optionally, the composition can contain up to 20 weight percent of colloidal silica and/or up to 5 weight percent of other types of monoorganosilsesquioxanes based upon the total weight of solids in the composition. The coated substrates are heated until the coating cures, preferably at 50.degree. C. to 150.degree. C., to form a transparent coating which renders the substrate more resistant to corrosion induced by acids or salts such as road salt or ocean spray.

Method for rendering non-ferrous metals corrosion resistant

A pigment-free coating composition comprising an acidic dispersion of colloidal titania, colloidal silica and hydroxylated silsesquioxane in an alcohol-water medium. A coating of the composition cured on a plastic substrate such as polycarbonate results in a hard, abrasion-resistant protective coating. Such coatings transmit visible light, but absorb wavelengths of ultraviolet light which cause degradation of the substrate surface and resultant adhesion-loss of the protective coating upon weathering. A cured coating of these compositions deposited on metal substrates such as aluminum results in a hard, abrasion resistant coating which offers slightly more corrosion protection than such a composition without colloidal titania.
