A printing system includes a first imaging unit configured to print a first image and a registration mark associated with the first image on a web contemporaneously during a production run, and a sensor configured to detect the registration mark at a point where the registration mark is within a second imaging unit. The printing system further includes a controller configured to calculate an offset along a width direction of the web based on the registration mark and to instruct the second imaging unit to print the second image on the web. The second image is shifted in its entirety in accordance with the calculated offset and is printed on the same side of the web as the first image.

A printing system includes a first imaging unit configured to print a first image and a single registration mark associated with the first image on a substrate contemporaneously during a production run, and a sensor configured to detect the registration mark at a point where the registration mark is within a second imaging unit. The printing system further includes a controller configured to calculate an offset along a width direction of the substrate based on the single registration mark and to instruct the second imaging unit to print the second image on the substrate. The second image is shifted in its entirety in accordance with the calculated offset and is printed on the same side of the substrate as the first image.

Use of a sense mark to control a printing system

A method of printing on a substrate includes the steps of instructing a first imaging unit to print a first image and a registration mark on a substrate contemporaneously during a production run and detecting the registration mark. The method further includes the steps of determining a position on the substrate where a second image is to be printed in accordance with the detection of the registration mark and instructing a second imaging unit to print the second image on the substrate in accordance with the determined position.

A printing system includes a printer that prints only a sense mark on a substrate and an imaging unit. The imaging unit prints data onto the substrate and includes a plurality of printheads. The printing system also includes a sensor that detects the sense mark and a controller that instructs the imaging unit to print data onto the substrate, wherein the controller distributes print data among the plurality of printheads.

A raster image processing system and method that can keep up with the fastest high resolution printers now available can process images 'on the fly'--that is, generate images from compact input representations so rapidly that printing can occur substantially in the same real time as raster image processing of input data. This system is capable of automatically 'screening' data relating to the images so that the various gray scales or color levels are correct for a contone printing process. Different print engine control modules can be replaceably plugged into and out of the system to allow it to be used with different types of print engines/intelligent imaging systems--including high speed, high resolution color printing engines. A high speed data cache and associated array disk drive provide high speed throughput of data into the system. The disk array may, for example, store a library of high resolution graphics that can be accessed 'on the fly' as needed in response to the input data stream. A graphics accelerator can generate, on the fly, many 'primitive' or simple graphics (e.g, angles, lines, boxes, etc.) at the same time that the remainder of the print image is being generated.
