A photochromic [1,2-b] naphthopyran having a fluoro substituent in at least one of the 7-position or the 9-position of the naphthopyran provides a stable photochromic compound with a narrow range of absorption. A preferred photochromic naphthopyran has the 2-position of the naphthopyran with two aromatic substituents thereon. It is further preferred to have at least one 2-position aromatic substituent comprising a phenyl group. The photochromic naphthopyran may also have at least one 2-position aromatic substituent comprise a phenyl group having one substituent selected from the group consisting of an anthranilyl, azepinyl, benzoxazolyl, dialkylamino, diazepinyl, diazolyl, imidazolidinyl, imidazolyl, imidazolinyl, indazolyl, indo eninyl, indolinyl, indolizinyl, indolyl, indoxazinyl, isobenzazolyl, isoindolyl, isooxazolyl, isooxazyl, isopyrrol, isoquinolyl, isothiazolyl, julolideno, morpholino, morpholinyl, oxadiazolyl, oxathiazolyl, oxathiazyl, oxathiolyl, oxatriazolyl, oxazolyl, piperazinyl, piperazyl, piperidyl, purinyl, pyranopyrrolyl, pyrazinyl, pyrazolidinyl, pyrazolinyl, pyrazolyl, pyrazyl, pyridazinyl, pyridazyl, pyridyl, pyrimidinyl, pyrimidyl, pyridenyl, pyrrolidinyl, pyrrolinyl, pyrroyl, quinolizinyl, quinocyclidinyl, quinolyl, thiazolyl, triazolyl and triazyl group.

Naphthopyran compounds, photoresponsive compositions and lenses

It is difficult to provide abrasion resistance coatings with both good coatability, optical clarity and the ability to be tinted after application of the coating to a transparent substrate, such as an ophthalmic lens. An abrasion-resistant coating that adheres well to the substrate and is clear, transparent, colorless, and free of visible specks comprises a solvent, an epoxy resin composition, an aminosilane, and an hydrocarbyltrihydrocarboxysilane, such as an alkyltrialkoxysilane. The aminosilane may be a partially hydrolyzed aminosilane that is effectively blocked from reacting with the epoxy resin composition at ambient temperature. The coating composition is applied to the substrate and then treated to remove any block from the hydrolyzable aminosilane such that the aminosilane and the epoxy resin composition react to form an abrasion-resistant coating. The coating is also controllably tintable and is strongly adherent to the substrate even after tinting or exposure to heat and humidity.

The present invention relates to naphthopyrans, particularly 3,3-&lsqb;substituted&rsqb;-naphtho&lsqb;2,1-b&rsqb;pyrans and 2,2-&lsqb;substituted&rsqb;-naphtho&lsqb;1,2-b&rsqb;pyrans and particularly to novel substitution on the 3-position and 2-position, respectively, of these naphthopyrans. It has been found that there are classes and types of substitution on the 3-position and 2-position (especially combinations of 3,3-substitution and 2,2-substitution) which are novel. Some of these substitutions provide particularly desirable properties. In particular, the present invention relates to naphthopyrans wherein one 3-substituent or one 2-substituent comprises a phenyl group (including phenyl, substituted phenyl, biphenyl or substituted biphenyl) and the other 3-position or other 2-position substituent comprises a substituted or unsubstituted group selected from the group consisting of anthranilyl, azepinyl, benzoxazolyl, diazepinyl, dioazlyl, imidazolidinyl, imidazolyl, imidazolinyl, indazolyl, indoleninyl, indolinyl, indolizinyl, indolyl, indoxazinyl, isobenzazolyl, isoindolyl, isooxazolyl, isooxazyl, isopyrroyl, isoquinolyl, isothiazolyl, morpholino, morpholinyl, oxadiazolyl, oxathiazolyl, oxathiazyl, oxathiolyl, oxatriazolyl, oxazolyl, piperazinyl, piperazinyl, piperazyl, piperidyl, purinyl, pyranopyrrolyl, pyrazinyl, pyrazolidinyl, pyrazolinyl, pyrazolyl, pyrazyl, pyridazinyl, pyridazyl, pyridyl, pyrimidinyl, pyrimidyl, pyridenyl, pyrrolidinyl, pyrrolinyl, pyrroyl, quinolizinyl, quinuclidinyl, quinolyl, thiazolyl, triazolyl, and triazyl.

A photochromic article that includes a host material and a photochromic amount of a benzopyran compound, the benzopyran compound represented by one of the formulas: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, R.sub.4, R.sub.5, R.sub.6, R.sub.7, R.sub.8, R.sub.9, and R.sub.10 are selected from hydrogen, a stable organic radical, a heterocyclic group, halogen, a nitrogen-substituted group, and a nitrogen-substituted ring compound.

An umbrella holder is provided which permits the user to be protected by an umbrella while permitting the user's hands to remain free. The holder includes a waist belt and shoulder strap. Means for securing the umbrella handle to the waist belt and the umbrella shaft to the shoulder strap are provided. Photochromic compounds

An improved composition for producing a scratch-resistant coating for a plastic object together with the process of making and applying the coating is herein disclosed. Included in the composition is a mixture of a nonsilane organic epoxy compound and a partially hydrolyzed aminosilane reacted with a carbonyl-containing compound in an organic solvent. The mixture is applied to a plastic surface which is then heated to cure the coating into a hard transparent film which can be tinted quickly and darkly with an organic dye.
