The residual of an easy open can end is controlled by a band heater mounted on the anvil in conversion system tooling. The separation at closest approach of the score and anvil in the conversion tooling is altered as necessary by thermal expansion and contraction of the anvil as determined by the power supplied to the band heater. An electrical circuit supplies power to the heater and includes a thermocouple for maintaining the anvil at a set temperature. A loop control periodically diverts a finished end from the conveyor, measures the residual and adjusts power to the heater if necessary to bring the residual into specification.

Conversion system tooling heater

A press for converting work pieces into finished parts has an elongated bolster mounted on a press bed. The bolster supports columns on which a ram is slidable. The bolster also supports the lower die shoe of the press tooling. A conveyor or transfer system mounted on the bolster carries work pieces into and out of the area of the tooling. The bolster is a unitary piece which integrates support of the die shoe, columns and conveyor to assure proper cooperation and alignment among them. A pivotable carrier mounts a feed mechanism for feeding a stock strip into the tooling. Power to the feed mechanism is supplied through a shaft which is coaxial with the hinge line of the carrier, so that the carrier can be swung away from the tooling for service access without requiring disconnection of the power supply. A traveling vacuum box on the lower die shoe supports the conveyor for vertical as well as longitudinal motion, and retains the work pieces on the conveyor.

Dual lane conversion system

An electrocoating machine for easy-open can ends has an electrocoating wheel rotatable about a horizontal axis and partially submersed in a bath of electrocoating solution. The electrocoating wheel carries ends into and through the bath. A transfer turret and elevator convey coated ends from the electrocoating wheel to a rinse wheel. The rinse wheel surrounds the electrocoating wheel and is mounted for rotation about a vertical axis. The rinse wheel is disposed in a tub which contains a plurality of nozzles for spraying rinse solution on the ends carried by the rinse wheel.

Rotary electrocoating machine

A punch press has first and second sets of tooling mounted longitudinally of a press conveyor belt. The second set of tooling is located externally of the usual press columns. A second ram slidably mounted on the outside of the columns is driven by a connecting arm eccentrically mounted on a crankshaft extension. The second ram drives the upper tooling of the second tooling set in a reciprocating manner. The second ram can be operated out of phase with the main ram to reduce the total tonnage required of the press.

An electrocoating machine has a frame supporting a series of tanks containing solutions for electrocoating work pieces such as can ends. A wheel is mounted for rotation on the frame and has a plurality of work piece holders spaced about its periphery. Each work piece holder has a pair of spaced, flexible fingers, each having a free end which is cantilevered from the wheel. As the wheel rotates, cams displace the free ends of the fingers at a point shortly before they enter the electrocoating tank. A work piece transfer apparatus places a work piece adjacent the displaced fingers at a pickup point. The cams then release the fingers so they engage the work piece in spring-loaded gripping relation. The wheel carries work pieces from the pickup point, down into the electrocoating solution and then to a rinse conveyor.

Transport apparatus for electrocoating machines

A press for converting work pieces into finished parts has an endless conveyor for carrying work pieces into and out of the area of the press tooling. Work pieces rest in openings formed in the conveyor. A vacuum box on the lower side of the conveyor's forward run applies a vacuum to the work pieces to retain them on the conveyor. The conveyor has a plurality of transverse beads located intermediate the work piece openings. The beads stiffen the conveyor, thereby reducing deflection of the belt due to the load placed on it from the underside by the vacuum box.

Conveyor for conversion systems

A method and apparatus are disclosed and can be used to fabricate a complete container end closure including an inwardly tipped cover hook located along the peripheral extremity. The apparatus and its use in performing the method are unique in that one tool does all the forming to produce the complete end closure. More particularly, the cover hook is preformed by a first tool operation and then finally formed by a subsequent step wherein the preformed end is reformed to a final configuration in a step which is completely independent of the first tool.

Forming of end closures

An apparatus for the high speed transfer of workpieces in a multi-station machine. The stations are located in a common plane, in axial alignment and are equidistantly spaced. The apparatus utilizes a carrier assembly, which incorporates a pair of parallel barrels with a shaft received within the bore of each barrel. A series of confronting openings, which expose the shafts, are formed in the barrel walls at intervals which correspond with the spacing of the machine stations. A pair of gripping fingers are located at each barrel opening. A first finger is affixed to the barrel, extending outwardly therefrom, while a second finger which is affixed to the shaft, extends through the barrel wall opening to cooperate with the first finger. By pivoting the barrels in unison, with respect to the shafts, which are rotatably locked, the fingers can be caused to assume either a gripping or releasing attitude. A drive pivots the barrels and cooperatively reciprocates the carrier assembly to advance the workpiece from station to station in synchronization with the operation of the machine.

Transfer mechanism

A decoration is transferred to a cylindrical body by employing a surface so configured as to maintain continuous contact with that body throughout the time of transfer; the body is supported for rotation during and as an incident to transfer but it may be positively driven at a greater speed, particularly in the instance where the decoration is a thin film label, which needs to be tensioned.

An injection molding apparatus for forming a molded sealing ring along a peripheral region of a disk-shaped closure insert for a container. Each cavity of a plural cavity injection mold is formed to receive a disk-shaped insert to which a sealing ring is to be molded. Detection means is provided to sense the number of inserts missing from the mold, and a spring loaded pin is operative automatically to close the corresponding gate for each cavity from which an insert is missing. The detection means is operable to signal a molding compound supply means to inject into the mold only that volume of compound required for a cavity or cavities in which an insert or inserts are present.
