Improved organic anti-wear additive compositions are disclosed containing certain citric acid esters, e.g., mixtures comprising citrate oligomers, and fatty acid alkanolamides. The combination exhibits excellent and synergistic anti-wear activity in lubricants. The compositions of the invention beneficially allow one to reduce amounts of zinc and phosphorus that are often used in lubricants, while boosting anti-wear performance and maintaining, and often enhancing, friction reduction properties.

Organic anti-wear additive compositions for lubricants

The addition of mixed thio acid amide molybdenum dithiocarbamates to lubricant compositions comprising magnesium detergents and/or overbased magnesium detergents, e.g., overbased magnesium sulfonate, provides lubricant compositions that suppress Low Speed Pre-Ignition and possess excellent low friction characteristics. Furthermore, the addition of molybdenum based friction reducing additives, e.g., mixed thio acid amide molybdenum dithiocarbamates, in combination with one or more fatty acid 2-hydroxyalkylamides, to lubricant compositions comprising magnesium detergents or overbased magnesium detergents provides lubricant compositions that suppress Low Speed Pre-ignition and possess excellent low friction characteristics.

An improved organic and molybdenum friction modifier combination is disclosed, the combination resulting in a synergistic result of both initial friction reduction performance and a further retention and durability of continued friction reduction performance. These results will produce added benefit from, e.g., formulated passenger car motor oils targeting lower viscosity formulations to help improve fuel economy.

Synergy and enhanced performance retention with organic and molybdenum based friction modifier combination

Certain citric esters and amides, and certain mixtures thereof, e.g., mixtures comprising citrate oligomers, exhibit excellent anti-wear activity in lubricants. Many of these compounds or mixtures of compounds also exhibit a high degree of anti-wear synergy in combination with zinc dihydrocarbyldithiophosphates. The compounds of the invention are thus valuable tools that can allow one to reduce the amounts of zinc, and phosphates, that are used in the lubricant without sacrificing anti-wear performance.

Lubricant compositions comprising an improved ashless organic friction modifier additive have been found to be capable of reducing both friction and wear. It has been found that mixtures of fatty-alkanolamides containing secondary hydroxyls on the amino alkyl substituent, such as amide mixtures prepared from bis(2-hydroxypropyl)amine and mixtures of at least two different Cfatty acids, provide better oil solubility and friction reduction than alkanolamides with primary, hydroxyl functionality, such as amide mixtures prepared from di-ethanol)amine.

Method for reducing engine wear with lubricants comprising 2-hydroxyalkylamide friction modifying/anti-wear compositions

Combining a metal based friction modifier, such as a molybdenum dialkyldithiocarbamate, and certain esters of hydroxy carboxylic acids, such as short chain alkyl esters of citric or tartaric acid, e.g., tributyl citrate, has a synergistic effect on lowering the friction coefficient of lubricating oils allowing one to reduce the amount of metal based friction modifier needed to adequately formulate a lubricant with low friction characteristics.

The invention is directed to polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and processes for forming PAOs. In one embodiment, the invention is to a process for forming a PAO comprising polymerizing C-C&#x3b1;-olefin monomers in the presence of hydrogen, a C-Csaturated hydrocarbon, e.g., a C-Csaturated straight-chain hydrocarbon, and a catalyst system in a reaction vessel, wherein the C-Csaturated straight-chain hydrocarbon has about the same number of carbon atoms as the C-C&#x3b1;-olefin monomers.
