A pedal system includes a user interface, e.g., a pedal for contacting by a driver of a vehicle, a force sensor, and a force transfer member between the user interface and the force sensor. A force applied to the user interface is detected and measured by the force sensor. One or more membranes, e.g., two membranes, are arranged at an outer surface of the force transfer member to decouple off-center loading and non-uniform forces, e.g., resulting from off-center force application at the user interface.

In a particular embodiment, a force sensor apparatus is disclosed that includes a sensor housing and a sensing assembly. In this particular embodiment, the sensing assembly includes a force-compliant element having a center portion and an outer portion; one or more sensing elements coupled to the center portion of the force-compliant element; and a flexible spring element having an outer diameter and a center portion. According to at least one embodiment of the present disclosure, the flexible spring element curves from the outer diameter to the center portion of the flexible spring element and the center portion of the flexible spring element is aligned with the center portion of the force-compliant element. In this embodiment, the outer diameter is separated from a ledge of the outer portion of the force-compliant element by a space.

Sensor apparatuses

Embodiments included herein are directed towards sensing devices and related methods. Embodiments may include a first gauge positioned on a port of the sensing device. A first resistor of the first gauge may be positioned in a first compression region of the port. A second resistor of the first gauge may also be positioned in the first compression region of the port.

A method of manufacturing a pressure sensor is shown, wherein the pressure sensor comprises a port element with a sealing structure and a membrane. Four strain gages will be attached to the membrane. The gages are used in a Wheatstone bridge to sense the fluid pressure. A first finite element action determines a first contour around the membrane central axis with equal compressive strain and a second contour around the membrane central axis with equal tensile strain wherein when fluid pressure is applied to the membrane strain on the first contour is opposite strain on the second contour. A second finite element action determines the four positions of the strain gages on the first and second contour such that the difference between the highest error signal and the lowest error signal at the output of the Wheatstone bridge is minimal under influence of parasitic forces.

Method of manufacturing a pressure sensor

A hermetic pressure sensor for measuring a fluid pressure includes a hermetic housing, formed of a first housing structure with a membrane section, a second housing structure hermetically connected to the first structure, and one or more strain sensing elements attached to the membrane section. The second housing structure includes openings for one or more electrical pins while a non-conductive hermetic seal holds the electrical pins in place. The pressure sensor measures the pressure of fluid entering the housing while also providing a hermetic seal.

A pressure sensor package includes a sense element configured to be exposed to a pressure environment, the sense element including at least one strain gauge, an electronics package disposed on a carrier and electrically coupled to the sense element, the carrier disposed on a port that includes the sense element, the port enabling a decoupling feature for sealing and parasitic sealing forces and a reduction of a port length, a housing disposed about the sense element and electronics package, and a connector joined to the housing and electrically connected to the electronics package, the connector including an external interface.
